Databases & Electronic Resources

Below is a list of the electronic databases and resources most frequently used by USA Biomedical students, faculty and staff. (Additional resources can be found HERE on the University Library's site.) To access a specific database/resources select from the list below.

USMLEasy Lite (via AccessMedicine)

AccessMedicine - AccessMedicine contains full-text versions of a number of major medical texts including Hurst's The Heart, Harrison's Online and Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease (MMBID). Among other things AccessMedicine also includes a USMLE study resource, Diagnosaurus (McGraw-Hill's differential diagnosis tool), Practice Guidelines (from Current Practice Guidelines in Primary Care), patient education information, and health news.

Access Surgery - AccessSurgery is an integrated online resource that provides medical students, surgical residents, and practicing surgeons with quick answers to surgical inquiries from reliable sources. Organized around the ACGME's (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) mandate, AccessSurgery delivers content in context.

AMED - Allied and Complementary Medicine bibliographic database is produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British Library. It covers a selection of journals in complementary medicine, palliative care and several professions allied to medicine.

CINAHL@EBSCO - The library's new access point to the Cummulated Index of Nursing and Allied Health database. EBSCO actually provess access to two databases: CINAHL Plus with Full-Text and Pre-CINAHL. CINAHL Plus with Full-Text provides indexing for nearly 2000 journals from the nursing and allied health fields. In addition to full-text journals, the database also contains dissertations, conference proceedings, practice standards, educational software, book chapters and Evidence-Based Care Sheets. PreCINAHL provides access to brand new, not-yet indexed articles from the Nursing and Allied Health professional journals.

Clinical Alerts - From the National Library of Medicine (NLM): Clinical alerts are current and critical findings from National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trials.

Clinical Pharmacology - The Clinical Pharmacology website contains information on prescription, OTC, new and investigational drugs; herbal and nutraceutical products; pediatric, adult and geriatric dosing; drug photos and product identification; patient education in English and Spanish; drug interactions and adverse reactions screening; intravenous compatibility reports; patient-speicific profiles and clinical alerts; advanced searching and drug comparisons; state-specific prescription writing.

CME (Continuing Medical Education) Resources - A selected list of online, CME resources and sites.

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - The premiere resource for Evidence-Based Medicine reviews.

ComDisDome Service - The Communications Sciences and Disorders Dome is an information database developed for educators, clinicians, researchers, and students in the fields of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Consumer Health Information - An alphabetical listing of selected consumer health websites on the Internet.

Directory of Open Access Journals - Directory of free, peer-reviewed journals including 264 Medical journals (many specialized), 22 Nursing journals, 103 Public Health journals, and 38 Dentistry journals.


DynaMed - A medical information database with over 1,800 clinical topic summaries. Designed for use at the point of care, providing best available evidence and updated daily.

EBSCO Medical Databases  - Includes the Biomedical Reference Collection, Nursing & Allied Health Collection, CINAHL Plus with Full-Text, Pre-CINAHL, Health Business Elite and lists all other EBSCO databases the University has access to.  There are over 475 fulltext online journals in the Biomedical Reference Collection, almost 300 in the Nursing & Allied Health Collection, and over 100 in the Health Business titles.

Electronic Books - Subject & alphabetic listing of USA's biomedical electronic journal collection. Shows specific holdings (date, volume) and provides link to each title.

Evidence-Based Medicine - Includes links to Evidence-Based Medicine sites and a link to the Cochrane Database  

Exam Master Online - Study for the USMLE, board certification exams, or review medical subjects using Exam Master Online. 

FirstSearch - Includes WorldCat, Article1st, Contents1st, ECO (full text scholarly journals online), ERIC, Proceedings, GPO, and more. 

HAPI@OVID - The Health and Psychosocial Instruments provides access to information on measurement instruments (questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/ manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests etc.) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, as well as library and information science.

Health Statistics Resources - A collection of online health statistics resources.

Integrated Medical Curriculum - The IMC website offers major courses taught in medical school. Developed from Gold Standard Multimedia's core collection of medical education CD-ROM products, then converted into an easy-to-use online format with powerful search features, the IMC contains in-depth text coverage, animations, streaming audio and video, photos and illustrations, interactive quizzes, quality content and more.

Internet Search Tools - A selection of Medical and General Search Tools for finding information on the World Wide Web.


ISI Web of Science - includes Science Citation Expanded enabling users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 5900 high impact science and technical research journals. Web of Science also provides cited reference searching allowing users to navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans . Users can also navigate to electronic full-text journal articles. (Coverage: 1992 - present)


Joanna Briggs Institute - a evidence based practice database of a collaborative (nursing, medicine and allied health professionals) evaluation of "evidence derived from a diverse range of resources, including experience, expertise and all forms of rigours research and and the synthesis, transfer and utilisation of the 'best available ' evidence into health care practice". Journal Citation Reports (JCR) - a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals. JCR tabulates quantifiable statistical information based on citation data, determines a publication’s impact and influence in the global research community and includes journal and category data.

MD Consult - MD Consult provides answers to clinical questions and helps the clinician keep up-to-date. Click HERE for a tutorial on how to search Yearbooks on the MDConsult site.

MEDLINE@OVID - MEDLINE is National Library of Medicine's (NLM) bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, healthcare administration, and the pre-clinical sciences dating back to 1966. It indexes articles from more than 3,700 journals published in the U.S. and 70 other countries. More information on OVID databases available HERE.

MEDLINEplus - MEDLINEplus provides extensive consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health and other reliable sources on over 600 diseases and conditions. Additionally the sites includes lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials. The site is updated daily.


Micromedex - Micromedex database provides excellent clinical information on drugs, diseases, acute care, toxicology and alternative medicines. It also contains an array of patient education materials.

NEJM Early Release Articles - Early-relase articles from the New England Journal of Medicine online.

NetLibrary 3 - NetLibrary 3 is a collection of over 11,100 current electronic books which USA student, faculty and staff can search, browse, check-out and read on a computer on campus or off. The checkout period for books from Netlibrary is currently 4 hours. In order to check out a book, you must create an account with NetLibrary. Click on "Create a Free Account" next to Login at the top right of the screen. Only single pages can be printed using your browser print button.

Newspaper Vertical File Online - A collection of articles about the University of South Alabama Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health from 1992 to present. (This service is not up to date due to technical difficulties.)

NLM Gateway - The NLM Gateway allows users to search in multiple databases at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). Current the Gateway simultaneously searches all of the following databases fron a single search interface: MEDLINE/PubMed, LOCATORplus, MEDLINEplus, ClinicalTrials.gov , DIRLINE, Meeting Abstracts, and HSRProj.

OTDBASE- Online database that includes over 8000 abstracts from more than 20 global OT journals (since 1970).

OTSeeker - OTseeker is a database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy. Trials have been critically appraised and rated to assist you to evaluate their validity and interpretability. These ratings will help you to judge the quality and usefulness of trials for informing clinical interventions.


OVID Databases - In addition to MEDLINE and Books@OVID, OVID also includes: AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine), Health and Psychosocial Instruments, HealthSTAR and a searchable database limited to available, full-text, online material.

PDA /Handheld Resources - A list of sites providing downloadable medically-related software for your Personal Digital Assistant. Some featured software is available for free while other requires purchase and/or registration.

Primal Pictures - An online, interactive anatomy images database.

PsycINFO - A psychology/psychiatry online index.

PubMed - offers free access to MEDLINE through the National Library of Medicine's Website. Using this link and adding the search command 'loprovusalib[sb]' will limit results to electronic journals to which the library subscribes. For example: a search for drugs from our electronic holdings would be worded: loprovusalib[sb] AND drugs

PubMed Central  - PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's digital archive of life sciences journal literature. Access to PMC is free and unrestricted.

R2 Library  -The R2 Library is a selection of high quality electronic books in medicine, nursing and allied health.

ScienceDirect - offers full-text access to journals from 16 fields of science, including the social sciences.  Full-text is available from approximately 600 journals subscribed to by the University of South Alabama or by other academic libraries in Alabama.  Can be used from any hardwired University of South Alabama computer.

Scopus - A multidisciplinary navigational tool for accessing scientific information. Scopus covers 14,000 peer-reviewed titles from 4,000 publishers and includes an integrated Web search via Scirus. The database includes approximately 27 million abstracts, extended with references and (forward) citations (i.e., citation searching).

SOUTHCat: The Library Catalog - SOUTHcat may be used to look up books and journals owned by the University's libraries. Our library catalog is now web-based so you may use Netscape or Internet Explorer to look up items. If you wish, you may use a simple telnet program for text-only access.  You may renew items from home!

STATRef!  Database including full-text online medical books on surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, pharmacology, family medicine, immunology and more.
