Electronic Databases & Resources
Below is a list of the various electronic databases and resources currently available to USA Biomedical students, faculty and staff. To access each resources just click on the name below. (Please note: although many of these databases are accessible from home through our proxy server, a few are only available through a hard-wired, campus work station.) For a brief description of each database/resource see alaphabetical listing below. If you have difficulty accessing certain databases and/or full-text from home please click HERE for further assistance. Trial Area/Testing Often the library has the opportunity to test products.  Normally these products will be available to us from on-campus computers only and for a limited time. Currently there are no trials running.

Alabama Virtual Library - Includes AccessScience (an online McGraw-Hill Science and Technology Encyclopedia), EBSCOhost, Electric Library, Encyclopedia Britannica, FirstSearch, Grolier Online, Proquest.  Can be used from any hardwired University of South Alabama computer.

Bioterrorism Resources - Web Resources on Medical and Public Health Response to Bioterrorism.


Clinical Pharmacology - The Clinical Pharmacology website contains information on prescription, OTC, new and investigational drugs; herbal and nutraceutical products; pediatric, adult and geriatric dosing; drug photos and product identification; patient education in English and Spanish; drug interactions and adverse reactions screening; intravenous compatibility reports; patient-speicific profiles and clinical alerts; advanced searching and drug comparisons; state-specific prescription writing. Cochrane Database - The premiere resource for Evidence-Based Medicine reviews.

The Current Contents Life Sciences section and Current Contents Clinical Medicine section is now available through the ISI Web of Science (see below for further details).The library provides a fee-based service for searching Current Contents as each weekly update is received.  Contact the library at medlib@bbl.usouthal.edu if you would like to subscribe to this service. Now available from home!

EBSCO Medical Databases  - Includes the Biomedical Reference Collection, Nursing & Allied Health Collection, Health Business Elite and lists all other EBSCO databases the University has access to.  There are over 475 fulltext online journals in the Biomedical Reference Collection, almost 300 in the Nursing & Allied Health Collection, and over 100 in the Health Business titles.

Electronic Publications - Alphabetic listing of electronic journals and books - some full text, some selected full text, some only abstracts and tables of contents.  Certain titles are only available from a University hardwired computer, need passwords, or may need prior registration.  Also included are Instructions for Authors and Medical Library Newsletters.

Evidence-Based Medicine - Includes links to Evidence-Based Medicine sites and a link to the Cochrane Database  Now available from home!

FirstSearch - Includes WorldCat, Article1st, Contents1st, ECO (full text scholarly journals online), ERIC, Proceedings, GPO, and more.  Now available from home!

Harrison's Online - The online version of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. Now available from home! Click here for help with Harrison's Online.

Hurst's The Heart - The online version of Hurst's The Heart is a recognized authority on cardiovascular health and disease and the anatomy of the heart. This comprehensive site provides the full text in a cross-referenced, searchable format plus links to MEDLINE abstracts, regular updates, and other features.

Integrated Medical Curriculum - The IMC website offers major courses taught in medical school. Developed from Gold Standard Multimedia's core collection of medical education CD-ROM products, then converted into an easy-to-use online format with powerful search features, the IMC contains in-depth text coverage, animations, streaming audio and video, photos and illustrations, interactive quizzes, quality content and more.

Internet Search Tools - A selection of Medical and General Search Tools for finding information on the World Wide Web.

ISI Web of Science - includes:
  • Science Citation Expanded enabling users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 5900 high impact science and technical research journals. Web of Science also provides cited reference searching allowing users to navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans . Users can also navigate to electronic full-text journal articles.
  • ISI Current Contents/Clinical Medicine provides access to complete bibliographic information from articles, editorials, meeting abstracts, commentaries, and all other significant items in recently published
    editions of over 1,120 of the world's leading clinical medicine journals and books in a broad range of categories.
  • ISI Current Contents/Life Sciences provides access to complete bibliographic information from articles, editorials, meeting abstracts, commentaries, and all other significant items in recently published
    editions of over 1,370 of the world's leading life sciences journals and books in a broad range of categories.
  • ISI Journal Citation Reports (JCR) presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories. The JCR Science Edition covers about 5,700 leading international science journals from the ISI database.

MD Consult - MD Consult provides answers to clinical questions and helps the clinician keep up-to-date.  Now available from home! Click here for help with MD Consult.

Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Diseases (MMBID) - The Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease (MMBID) database is an in-depth source for information on human genetics. It includes information from the entire field of genetics and users can obtain answers to the molecular and metabolic underpinnings of a growing list of diseases as well as retrieve updates on pathophysiology and treatment.Now available from home!

Newspaper Vertical File Online - A collection of articles about the University of South Alabama Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health from 1992 to present. (This service is not up to date due to technical difficulties.)

OVID Medline/CINAHL - OVID Medline/CINAHL is available to University patrons.
This page also contains a link to an interactive, online OVID tutorial.

PDR Electronic Library - besides the full text of the Physician's Desk Reference itself, PDR Electronic Library has the capability of looking up items by side effect, contraindication, indications, drug interactions, manufacturer, product name, product category and photo.  It also has multi-drug interaction report where the user may enter multiple drug names and PDR will show a report if the drug insert says two or more of the drugs are incompatible or that there is a cautionary note when the drugs are combined. PubMed - offers free access to MEDLINE through the National Library of Medicine's Website. Using this link and adding the search command 'loprovusalib[sb]' will limit results to electronic journals to which the library subscribes. For example: a search for drugs from our electronic holdings would be worded: loprovusalib[sb] AND drugs

ScienceDirect - offers full-text access to journals from 16 fields of science, including the social sciences.  Full-text is available from approximately 600 journals subscribed to by the University of South Alabama or by other academic libraries in Alabama.  Can be used from any hardwired University of South Alabama computer. Selected Medical Links - a collection of librarian-selected medical links broken down into two major categories: Medical Specialties and Medical Subjects.

SOUTHCat: The Library Catalog - SOUTHcat may be used to look up books and journals owned by the University's libraries. Our library catalog is now web-based so you may use Netscape or Internet Explorer to look up items. If you wish, you may use a simple telnet program for text-only access.  You may renew items from home!

STAT!Ref  Contains 24 full-text online medical books including: drug information, dermatology, pharmacology, family medicine, immunology and lots more!
