EBP Class

Simple Internet Tools and Strategies to Find Evidence-Based Information for Your Practice:
Resources in Neurology and Pediatrics

COURSE HANDOUT (pdf)

CLASS PRESENTATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will emphasize the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) for the PT clinician and will highlight simple ways to increase your access to the literature, especially for neurologic and pediatric practice.  We will introduce practical ways a therapist can use the Internet to readily identify and gain access to information that will support optimal EBP clinical decision-making.  Steps include formulating clear clinical questions based on patient problems, selecting appropriate resources, searching the literature for relevant clinical studies, accessing and evaluating the evidence for its validity and value, and ultimately implementing useful findings into clinical practice.  We will present search options, resources and specific strategies that will aid individuals in effectively searching for and obtaining current evidence-based information.  Discussion will include scientific journals, books, and Internet resources.   Particularly useful resources will be demonstrated and summarized on a web site to improve your access after returning home.

Learner Based Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of reliable and current information and resources in evidence-based PT practice.
  2. Develop a well-built clinical question and identify appropriate resources and access modes for evidence-based information to answer the question.
  3. Implement a literature search including options for acquiring full-text articles.
  4. Evaluate the credibility and value of print and electronic documents retrieved.
  5. Implement findings into clinical practice
