USA assistant dean wins $104,000 grant

Dr. Hattie Myles, assistant dean for special projects and student affairs
at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, was recently
awarded a grant of about $104,000 to continue a summer program that recruits
and encourages minority premedical students to pursue medical careers.

The Biomedical Enrichment and Recruitment program, which
began at USA in 1985, is designed to assess and improve the ability
of minority students to perform in medical school through an early
introduction to its rigors. Students participate in the two-part
program during the summers prior to their junior and senior years
of undergraduate study.

The program is partially funded by the U.S. Health Resources
and Services Administration.
