Odyssey USA sets open house for Sept. 17
Odyssey USA will hold
its annual membership open house from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept.
17 in the Student Center Ballroom on the main campus of the University
of South Alabama.
Membership in the organization is open to anyone
age 55 and over who would like to continue learning past retirement.
Odyssey USA members are not enrolled in the university, but take
classes once a week each term.Classes begin Oct. 1.
Courses
range from arts, history, jazz, Gulf Coast culture, philosophy
and finance.

Benefit
dinner on tap for Faulkner University
MONTGOMERY - Musical
trio Riders in the Sky will perform at Faulkner University's
annual benefit dinner and fund-raiser at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Montgomery
Civic Center.
``More than any other benefit dinner guest,
we've receive more positive comments about Riders in the Sky,''
said Billy D. Hilyer, Faulkner University president. ``That's
why we are bringing them back for an encore performance.''
Since
1977, Riders in the Sky has tended the musical tradition
kindled by singing cowboy legends such as the Sons of The Pioneers
and Gene Autrey, said Charlotte Hardison, director of public
information at Faulkner. Riders in the Sky will be joined at the
benefit dinner by Joey the CowPolka King and western poet and singer
Red Steagall.

USA laboratory gains CAP accreditation
The
Reproductive Endocrinology Laboratory at the University of
South Alabama College of Medicine, department of OB/GYN, has been
awarded a two-year accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory
Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists, based on
the results of a recent on-site inspection.
The laboratory's director,
Dr. Botros Rizk, said the CAP accreditation was an honor.
``This
distinction reaffirms the commitment of the university, department
of OB/GYN and the staff at the Reproductive Endocrinology
Laboratory to provide quality medical care for our
patients,'' Rizk said.
There are about 5,000 CAP-accredited laboratories
nationwide.
USSA awards two honorary doctorates.
The
United States Sports Academy recently awarded honorary doctorates
to Jack Lengyel, athletic director at the Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Md., and Retired Gen. Wismoyo Arismunadar, president
of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia.
The honorary
doctorates were conferred during July 30 graduation exercises
at the Mobile Convention Center.
Lengyel has been director of athletics
at the Naval Academy for the past 11 years. He gained recognition
as director of athletics at the University of Missouri
and Fresno State, said USSA spokesman Steve Bett.
Arismunadar,
who graduated from the Indonesian Military Academy in 1963, was
a gold medalist in judo in the 1960 Military Sport Championship.
USSA also awarded the Distinguished Alumnus award to Essa Ahmed
Al-Jowder, former director of the Sports Institute in Bahrain.
This year's award for Outstanding Doctoral Degree Student
went to Yean Sub ``Jon'' Lim.
