University of South Alabama: Making a Difference Making A Difference...that's the goal of every college student, and the University of South Alabama can help you reach that goal.Our diverse and nationally recognized academic programs, exceptional faculty, and variety of student services and campus activities have made USA the fastest growing public university in Alabama for the past five years.

In recent months, USA has completed a $9.4 million renovation and expansion of the University Library; dedicated a $2.3 million, 13-acre Intramural Field Complex; opened the new USA Technology and Research Park, which is strengthening the area's economy through academic-corporate partnerships; and made great progress in developing the USA Cancer Research Institute, which will provide the region with a comprehensive center for cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and research.

Degrees are available in the colleges of Allied Health Professions, Arts and Sciences, Mitchell College of Business, Education, Engineering, Medicine and Nursing; the Schools of Computer and Information Sciences; and Continuing Education and Special Programs.

The College of Allied Health Professions provides the highest quality programs in basic medical sciences and health professional education, meeting health care needs and contributing to new knowledge through research. Job opportunities abound and the demand for graduates is strong!

The College of Arts and Sciences is committed to disciplines involving the nature of humanity and the universe, the motivations and processes of human relationships, and the creative arts through which people express their thoughts and feelings. Graduates are capable of enlightened evaluation of our complex world.

The Mitchell College of Business has as its mission the personal and professional development of our students and citizens, the economic development of the region and the continuing success of the university. This is accomplished through programs such as the Abraham Mitchell Scholars program for outstanding freshmen, and the college e-commerce degree program, the first of its kind in the state.

The College of Education has as its objectives the preparation of professional educators and support personnel, assisting schools with instructional programs, preparation of students for careers other than teaching, and research to expand, enhance and evaluate programs and personnel.

The College of Engineering provides students with quality education and prepares them for professional careers, serves the community through outreach programs, and is a catalyst for economic and technological development of the state, region and nation. Students especially benefit from the many research partnerships the college has formed with a wide variety of businesses and industries.

The College of Medicine provides students with training and knowledge in basic human biology with an in-depth knowledge of a basic medical science discipline. Graduates will receive the doctoral degree in basic medical sciences, with specializations available in several disciplines.

The new USA Cancer Research Institute, the first of its kind in the region, promises to place USA at the forefront of cancer research, treatment and prevention. Dr. Michael Boyd, a worldwide leader in cancer research, is the institute's director. Several other internationally renowned researchers have joined the institute as well. The institute's revolutionary new PET/CT scanner - the first of its kind in Alabama - is already making a difference for cancer patients through earlier diagnosis and treatment.

The College of Nursing is dedicated to educating professional nurses who provide the highest quality health care to the communities they serve. Students are served by excellent faculty and benefit the resources of the university's hospitals and clinics, as well as other health-care agencies throughout the region.

The School of Computer and Information Sciences provides a stimulating curriculum which includes a variety of courses for students in many disciplines, as well as for citizens in the business and industrial community. Together, the CIS courses, faculty and facilities provide a rich, stimulating environment for solving problems and exploring new ideas.

The School of Continuing Education and Special Programs is an advocate for the adult and nontraditional student in the region, providing educational services to individual students and institutional clients. Both credit and noncredit classes are offered on evenings and weekends.

Small class sizes (average 18) demonstrate USA's commitment to excellence in education. USA has scholarships for freshmen who score 21 and above on the ACT with a 3.0 grade point average. USA continues to enhance academic opportunities, awarding a record 2,800 academic scholarships last year, implementing the USA Honors Program, increasing graduate student teaching and research assistantships and providing supplemental instruction to assist students in historically difficult courses. To further underscore the academic excellence of USA students, they enjoy exceptionally high passage rates on nursing, allied health and education licensure examinations.

USA is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. USA is large enough to offer a diverse selection of course offerings, yet small enough to offer individualized instruction.

In addition to the academic environment, the university offers a host of student activities. More than 130 honor societies, professional and department organizations, special interest clubs and religious groups are currently active at USA.

Jaguar athletics provides students with the best in NCAA Division I intercollegiate competition, enhanced by the 10,000-seat Mitchell Center, the sparkling home for Jaguar basketball. The Mitchell Center has ushered in a new era for the university, attracting activities and events like never before. South Alabama regularly claims the Sun Belt Conference award for the best all-around athletic program. An ambitious intramural program offers basketball, volleyball, racquetball, handball, weightlifting, aerobics, an exercise area and an indoor track. Softball, flag football and water polo are also part of the intramural picture.

The University of South Alabama has an enrollment of more than 13,000 students from nearly all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries. USA alumni now number more than 52,000, including more than 1,600 practicing physicians.

You may also schedule an individual appointment to meet with an admissions officer and tour the campus and residence halls. Tours are held most weekdays at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. by appointment.
