University of South Alabama: Making a Difference Making A Difference...that's
the goal of every college student, and the University of South Alabama can help
you reach that goal. Our diverse and nationally recognized academic programs,
exceptional faculty, and variety of student services and campus activities have
made USA the fastest growing public university in Alabama for the past five
years.
In recent months, USA has completed a $9.4
million renovation and expansion of the University Library;
dedicated a $2.3 million, 13-acre Intramural Field Complex;
opened the new USA Technology and Research Park, which
is strengthening the area's economy through academic-corporate
partnerships; and made great progress in developing the
USA Cancer Research Institute, which will provide the region
with a comprehensive center for cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and
research.
Degrees are available in the colleges of
Allied Health Professions, Arts and Sciences, Mitchell
College of Business, Education, Engineering, Medicine and
Nursing; the Schools of Computer and Information Sciences;
and Continuing Education and Special Programs.
The College
of Allied Health Professions provides the highest quality
programs in basic medical sciences and health professional
education, meeting health care needs and contributing to new knowledge through
research. Job opportunities abound and the demand for graduates is strong!
The College of Arts and Sciences is committed
to disciplines involving the nature of humanity and
the universe, the motivations and processes of human
relationships, and the creative arts through which
people express their thoughts and feelings. Graduates
are capable of enlightened evaluation of our complex
world.
The Mitchell College of Business has as its
mission the personal and professional development of
our students and citizens, the economic development
of the region and the continuing success of the university.
This is accomplished through programs such as the Abraham
Mitchell Scholars program for outstanding freshmen, and
the college e-commerce degree program, the first of its kind in the state.
The
College of Education has as its objectives the preparation of professional
educators and support personnel, assisting schools with
instructional programs, preparation of students for careers
other than teaching, and research to expand, enhance and
evaluate programs and personnel.
The College of Engineering
provides students with quality education and prepares them
for professional careers, serves the community through
outreach programs, and is a catalyst for economic and technological
development of the state, region and nation. Students especially benefit
from the many research partnerships the college has formed
with a wide variety of businesses and industries.
The College
of Medicine provides students with training and knowledge
in basic human biology with an in-depth knowledge of a
basic medical science discipline. Graduates will receive
the doctoral degree in basic medical sciences, with specializations
available in several disciplines.
The new USA Cancer Research
Institute, the first of its kind in the region, promises
to place USA at the forefront of cancer research, treatment
and prevention. Dr. Michael Boyd, a worldwide leader in
cancer research, is the institute's director. Several other
internationally renowned researchers have joined the institute
as well. The institute's revolutionary new PET/CT scanner - the first
of its kind in Alabama - is already making a difference
for cancer patients through earlier diagnosis and treatment.
The College of Nursing is dedicated to
educating professional nurses who provide the highest
quality health care to the communities they serve. Students
are served by excellent faculty and benefit the resources
of the university's hospitals and clinics, as well as
other health-care agencies throughout the region.
The
School of Computer and Information Sciences provides
a stimulating curriculum which includes a variety of
courses for students in many disciplines, as well as
for citizens in the business and industrial community.
Together, the CIS courses, faculty and facilities provide
a rich, stimulating environment for solving problems and
exploring new ideas.
The School of Continuing Education
and Special Programs is an advocate for the adult and nontraditional
student in the region, providing educational services to individual students
and institutional clients. Both credit and noncredit classes are offered
on evenings and weekends.
Small class sizes (average 18)
demonstrate USA's commitment to excellence in education.
USA has scholarships for freshmen who score 21 and above
on the ACT with a 3.0 grade point average. USA continues
to enhance academic opportunities, awarding a record 2,800
academic scholarships last year, implementing the USA Honors
Program, increasing graduate student teaching and research
assistantships and providing supplemental instruction to
assist students in historically difficult courses. To further
underscore the academic excellence of USA students, they
enjoy exceptionally high passage rates on nursing, allied health and education
licensure examinations.
USA is fully accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools. USA is large enough to offer a diverse selection
of course offerings, yet small enough to offer individualized
instruction.
In addition to the academic environment,
the university offers a host of student activities. More
than 130 honor societies, professional and department organizations,
special interest clubs and religious groups are currently
active at USA.
Jaguar athletics provides students with
the best in NCAA Division I intercollegiate competition,
enhanced by the 10,000-seat Mitchell Center, the sparkling home for
Jaguar basketball. The Mitchell Center has ushered in a
new era for the university, attracting activities and events
like never before. South Alabama regularly claims the Sun
Belt Conference award for the best all-around athletic
program. An ambitious
intramural program offers basketball, volleyball, racquetball, handball, weightlifting,
aerobics, an exercise area and an indoor track. Softball, flag football and
water polo are also part of the intramural picture.

Alabama has an enrollment of more than 13,000 students from nearly
all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries. USA
