RICHARD ESHAM, M.D., a Mobile internal medicine
physician,
has been named president of the Alabama Society of Internal
Medicine
for 1998-99.
Esham took over as president at a recent joint
meeting of the
Alabama chapter of the American College of Physicians and the Alabama
Society of Internal Medicine.
He was certified by the American Board of Internal
Medicine
in 1971 and inducted as a Fellow in the American College
of Physicians
in 1975. He also received the Internist of the Year'' award
in
1994 from the Alabama Society of Internal Medicine.
Esham works at the University of South Alabama
Department of Internal
Medicine division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
The University of South Alabama Children's
and Women's Hospital
has appointed KATHY MAY HARTUNG assistant administrator.
Her responsibilities include the direction
of the hospital's
non-clinical departments, such as Dietary Services, Hospital
Education and Supply Processing and Distribution.
She previously served as director of financial
support services at USA
Children's and Women's Hospital, director of financial services for USA
Doctors Hospital and USA Knollwood Park Hospital. She was assistant
comptroller for Doctors Hospital.
She holds degrees in business administration
and accounting from Brewer
State Junior College in Fayette, Ala., and the University of Alabama at
Tuscaloosa.
The University of South Alabama College of
Medicine is ranked
second in a nationwide survey of medical schools for graduating a high
percentage of medical school students who enter a generalist specialty field,
according to a recently released report by the Association of American
Medical Colleges.
The report, published in the 1998 Institutional
Goals Ranking
Report, shows that USA tied with Wright State and Marshall
University for a
second highest ranking among the 125 medical schools nationwide.
The Thomas Hospital Foundation in Fairhope
has awarded $2,300 in
scholarship funds to two Thomas Hospital employees.
Recipients are LATANYA EDWARDS, a PBX operator
in the communications
department, and CARLA STARK, a phlebotomist in the laboratory.
Both are pursuing bachelor's degrees in nursing at the University
of South Alabama.
The scholarships are funded by donations made
to the foundation
from employees, physicians, individuals, private foundations
and corporations.
