34 members represent cross-section of community

   The 34 members of the Leadership Mobile Class of 1994 have been selected,
according to Henry Holt, president of the board of directors. This
will be the 11th class for the program since its inception in 1974.

   The program for the class of 1994 will occur between Oct. 28 and
May 5, 1994. Participants attend seminars on major community issues,
and receive formal leadership training. After completing field
projects, class teams will give reports to the community of their
findings and make recommendations for community action.

   We are grateful to the members of the selection committee
for their diligent work over the past three months, and to the candidates
who made themselves available for the selection process,'' Holt
said. All of the candidates were excellent, which made the job
of the selection committee difficult.''

   Jimmy Hirs chaired the selection committee for the class of
1994. During July and August all candidates were interviewed,
and the committee met to complete its deliberation in September.
Class composition is consistent with the demographics of the community
and is as diverse as possible from the candidates available.

   The dean of the Class of 1994 is Orrin K. Ames III, a partner in
the law firm of Hand, Arendall, Bedsole, Greaves and Johnson and
a graduate of the Leadership Mobile Class of 1990. Dr. Sharon K.
Schneider, a practicing neuropsychologist at the University
of South Alabama in the department of neurology and a graduate of
the Leadership Mobile class of 1992,is the assistant dean.

   We welcome the class of 1994 to Leadership Mobile, with great
expectations for the new energy and vision they will bring to the
leadership network of our community,'' Holt said.

   Members of the class of 1994 are:

   Ruth L. Ball is a special agent with Northwestern Mutual Life.
She received her bachelor of science in early childhood education
from George State University in Knoxville, Tenn. Ms. Ball is the
current president and co-founder of Career Women of Mobile and
is the 1993 chairman for September Celebration.

   Kenneth J. Bloch is senior vice president at Providence Hospital.
He holds a bachelor of science in psychology from Louisiana State
University and a masters degree in hospital/health administration
from the University of Alabama. Bloch was the founder of Montgomery
Hospice Program in Montgomery and has lived in Mobile for five years.

   Chris L. Calametti is employed by Degussa Corp. as a project
manager. He is a graduate of the University of South Alabama with
a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He received his
masters degree from Spring Hill College. Calametti is the state
director and treasurer of the Alabama Society of Professional
Engineers.

   Melvin Clark is a commissioner for the Mobile Housing Board
and is pastor of the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Street Inc.
He is a graduate of the Alabama Interdenominational Seminary.
He is also the overseer of one of the oldest church-based daycare
centers in Mobile as well as being active in numerous religious
organizations in the community.

   Beverly E. Crandall, employed by Alabama Power Co., is the supervisor
of customer service. A native Mobilian, she graduated from the
University of South Alabama with a bachelor of science in marketing
and is a Project Business consultant for Junior Achievement.

   Audrey W. Cunningham, a native Mobilian, is a director of community
development for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce. She earned
her bachelor of arts in English at Prairie View A&M College in Texas.
She is a member of Mobile United, National Coalition of 100 Black
Women and The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

   Edna M. Davis is a senior chemist with Ciba-Geigy Corp. in Mclntosh.
She completed her bachelor of science in chemistry at St. Mary's
University in San Antonio, Texas. Ms. Davis is on the board of directors
of the Dumas Wesley Community Center and is a member of Mobile United
and Success By Six.

   Wallace T. Davis has resided in Mobile 16 years and is the president
and chief executive officer of Volunteers of America of South Alabama
Inc. He received his bachelor of science in social studies at Samford
University and attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary
where he received his doctorate in psychology and counseling.

   Eric T. Day is the law enforcement coordinator, victim witness
specialist, at the U.S. Attorney's Office. He is a native Mobilian
and a graduate of the University of South Alabama with a bachelor
of arts in criminal justice and a masters degree in counseling.
Day was chosen as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America and
has received numerous other awards for services to crime victims.

   Richard D. deShazo, professor of medicine and pediatrics and
chairman for the department of medicine at USA, earned his bachelors
degree in chemistry and religion at Birmingham-Southern College
and received his medical degree from the University of Alabama
at Birmingham School of Medicine. DeShazo is on the board of trustees
for Mobile County Medical Society and chairman of the administrative
board of Christ United Methodist Church.

   Rosalind P. Hale is the assistant professor and department
chair of educational leadership and foundations at the University
of South Alabama. She received a bachelors degree in math and physics
from Xavier University in New Orleans, a masters degree in secondary
education and administration from the University of South Alabama
and a educational doctorate in administration from Auburn University.

   Leigh Ladawn Harrison is executive director of Mobile AIDS
Support Services and has lived in Mobile 23 years. Ms. Harrison
has a bachelor of science in social services administration and
graduated cum laude from the University of South Alabama. She is
active in numerous civic groups including Mobile AIDS Coalition
and HIV/AIDS Planning Council.

   Stacey B. Howell, currently the volunteer director for Camp
Rap-A-Hope, attended Florida State University in Tallahassee
where she received her bachelors degree in special education and
was a school teacher for many years. She is past president of the
Auxiliary to the Medical Society of Mobile County and past vice
president of the Auxiliary to the Medical Society of the state of
Alabama. Ms. Howell was awarded the Mary Nell Perkins Award for
Distinguished Service by a board member of the Exploreum.

   Janice Missy'' Jones is president-elect of the Junior League
of Mobile and past president of the Mobile Historic Development
Commission. She holds a bachelor of arts in biology and art from
Rhodes College and a masters degree in social work from Tulane University.
She is a board member of the Art Patrons League and the Medical Auxiliary,
as well as a member of numerous other civic organizations.

   Lee M. Kalik, vice president of planning at United Way of Southwest
Alabama, holds a bachelors degree in psychology and a masters degree
in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. He has lived in
Mobile for one year and is president of the Marchfield Neighborhood
Association. Kalik was selected as Outstanding Kansas Citian
for his contribution to human services.

   Mary L. Kidd, a native Mobilian, is an administrative assistant
with the Prichard Housing Authority. She attended 20th Century
Business College and the Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
Ms. Kidd is involved with the community through her association
with the Order of Eastern Star, Coalition for a Drug Free Mobile
County and the Franklin Street Baptist Church.

   James E. Kilgore is employed by the Mobile County Department
Of Human Resources as the administrator of the food stamp program.
He received his associate degree in social service from Walker
Junior College and a bachelors degree from Livingston State University,
as well as an associate degree in personnel management from Wallace
State Junior College and a law degree from the Birmingham School
of Law.

   Sharon Y. King is an office assistant with the Board of Water
and Sewer Commissioners of Mobile Water Service System. She received
her bachelors degree in office administration/management from
Florida A&M University. Ms. King was awarded a certificate for
outstanding community service from the Sickle Cell Disease Association
and is a member of the PTA at Morningside and Dunbar magnet schools.

   Elliot B. Maisel, president of Gulf Distributing Company Inc.,
received a bachelor of science degree in business from the University
of Alabama. He is past president of the Mobile Jewish Welfare Fund.
Maisel received a certificate of award for outstanding service
from Mobile County and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

   Diana G. McNeil is an instructor at Bishop State Community College.
She has lived in Mobile for 27 years and earned her bachelors degree
in speech disorders from the University of Alabama and a masters
of education in reading degree from the University of South Alabama.
Ms. McNeil was Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1985 and 1988
and was Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1993 for Pillans Middle
School.

   Melissa C. Morrissette studied communications at the University
of Alabama and received a bachelors degree in history at Sweet Briar
College. She has been active in numerous civic groups including
the Junior League of Mobile, American Heart Association, United
Way Women's Advanced Gifts and the Mobile Ballet Decorator Showhouse.

   John P. Murphy is executive vice president and senior loan officer
at Colonial Bank. He has a bachelors degree in business management
from the University of Georgia and attended the graduate school
of banking at Louisiana State University. Murphy has lived in Mobile
two years and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and serves on
the loan committee and board of directors for the Mobile Business
Development Fund.

   D. Mark Nix is employed by Infirmary Health systems as a vice
president of real estate and properties and of Infirmary Medical
Clinics P.C. He graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama
with a bachelors degree in accounting and is a certified public
accountant and a licensed real estate agent.

   Karen Puckett Sullivan, a native Mobilian, is a branch manager
and assistant cashier with The Bank of Mobile. She has attended
the University of South Alabama and Faulkner State College and
holds an Alabama real estate license and Alabama insurance license.
She is a member of Airport-Metro Kiwanis Club, Mobile County Board
of Realtors and Mobile United.

   Luis C. Sandoval is a chief petty officer and career information
specialist with the U.S. Coast Guard. He earned his associate degree
in arts and science from the Ann Arundel Community College in Maryland.
Sandoval is president of the Elizabeth Fonde Elementary School
PTA and has received three Coast Guard Achievement Medals as well
as a commandant letter of commendation and the Hugh M. Casteix Award
from the Mobile Navy League Council.

   Amy L. Scarborough is employed by South Central Bell as assistant
staff manager. She earned her bachelors degree in journalism and
speech from Samford University and is pursuing her masters degree
in communications from the University of South Alabama. Ms. Scarborough
has received an award of excellence from the Southern Public Relations
Federation and the Public Relations Council of Alabama and the
Crystal Quill Award from the International Association of Business
Communicators.

   David L. Thomas Jr. is a native Mobilian and an instructor at
Bishop State Community College. Thomas holds a masters degree
in history from the University of South Alabama. His community
activities include the J.R. Thomas Boys Club Advisory Board, Mobile
Public Library Board, Mobile Historical Commission and the Senior
Bowl Committee.

   Glenn D. Vann is coordinator for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Avenue Redevelopment Corporation and has resided in Mobile two
years. He received his bachelors degree in political science from
Alcorn State University and his masters degree from the University
of Southern Mississippi. Vann is currently on the government and
race relations committees of Mobile United.

   Dennis R. Watson has been employed with Brown and Root Inc. for
13 years as the project manager of pulp and paper engineering. He
earned his bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the
University of South Alabama and is a registered professional engineer.
Watson is past secretary and treasurer of the American Institute
of Chemical Engineers.

   Paul C. Wesch is senior vice president and general counsel for
the Mitchell Co. Inc. He received his bachelors degree in political
science and law degree and masters degree in taxation from the University
of Alabama. Wesch is active in numerous civic groups including
the USS Alabama Battleship Commission, Alabama Republican Party
and the Mobile County Bar Association.

   Sherryll H. White is employed by the city of Mobile Parks, Recreation
and Culture Department as supervisor of the Community Activities
Program. She has a bachelor of arts degree in social work from Huntington
College and, from the University of South Alabama, a masters degree
in therapeutic recreation and a graduate certificate in gerontology.
Ms. White is a member of Blacks in Government and has been an Outstanding
Teenager of America and Outstanding Young Woman of America.

   Winston S. Williams Sr., a native Mobilian, has been employed
at Zeneca Inc. for 18 years and is a senior chemist. He studied chemistry
at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and received his bachelors
degree in natural sciences from the University of South Alabama.
Williams is a member and past vice president of the Mobile Youth
Football Conference.

   Nann M. Worel has resided in Mobile four years and is a self-employed
real estate investor with a masters degree in nursing from the University
of California. She is on the board of directors for the Mobile Symphony
Committee, the Fine Arts Museum of the South and the Mobile Union
Chapter of the Homeless. Ms. Worel is co-founder and past president
of the Adoption Connection, was chosen as Outstanding Young Woman
of America twice and awarded Outstanding Volunteer by the American
Cancer Society.

   Thomas A. Zoghby is the senior vice president of finance at David
Volkert & Associates Inc. Zoghby has a master of business administration
in accounting degree from the University of South Alabama and is
a certified public accountant. His involvement with local organizations
includes the Chamber of Commerce, Mobile Kiwanis, A-Plus Education
Coalition, USA Athletic Booster Club and the Alabama Society of
CPAs.
