Variety of programs await USA students
By Staff Reporter, Mobile Register, Apr. 12, 1998.

Degrees of distinction ... that's the need of every student who is
selecting a college. The university of South Alabama offers an outstanding
educational opportunity for you with the support of diverse and nationally
recognized academic programs, exceptional faculty, and a variety of student
services and campus activities.

With a wide choice of academic programs to prepare you for the most
demanding professions, undergraduate majors are available in eight
undergraduate academic units: College of Allied Health Professions,
College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Management
Studies, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of
Nursing, School of Computer and Information Sciences and the School of
Continuing Education and Special Programs.

The Graduate School offers 27 master's degree programs, three specialist
programs, four doctorate programs and one medical doctor program. In recent
years, doctorates in marine sciences, instructional design and development and
communication sciences and disorders were approved by the Alabama Commission
on Higher Education.

USA also boasts an outstanding College of Medicine and clinical
facilities, in addition to USA Medical Center, USA Children's
and Women's Hospital and USA Knollwood Park Hospital.

There are special programs and excellent facilities to help you meet your
goals, state-of-the-art computer labs with extended hours, excellent
libraries, well-equipped science and engineering laboratories and modern
extensive clinical facilities for allied health, health pre-professions and
nursing programs to provide support for academic programs.

Special programs such as advanced credit options, course exemption
for outstanding students, an Adult Degree Program, interdisciplinary
programs, cross-college minor programs, a flexible Developmental
Studies Program, Army ROTC and Cooperative Education are among
the many academic options available for USA students.

More than 80 percent of USA's faculty hold the doctorate degree
and, unlike many institutions, even the most senior faculty teach freshman
courses. In fact, graduate students do not teach undergraduate classes. This
emphasis on teaching, along with the small class sizes (average 20), and 1 to
17 faculty student ratio, demonstrates USA's commitment to excellence in
education.

The average ACT score for entering freshmen at USA is 22.8, higher
than both the state average and national average.

Transfer scholarships are available to qualified transfer
students. To further underscore the academic excellence of USA
students, they enjoy exceptionally high passage rates on nursing,
allied health and education licensure examinations.

The University of South Alabama is fully accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools, Accreditation Board for Engineering and
Technology, American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, Committee on
Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, American Medical
Association Council on Medical Education, American Occupational Therapy
Association, American Physical Therapy Association, American Speech Language

Music, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, National

And, the University is home to the only weather forecasting
center on any college campus in the nation.

On a campus with many out-of-class activities, more than 130
honor societies, professional and department organizations,
special interest clubs and religious groups are currently active
as USA.

They represent a wide variety of disciplines and interests
and provide an opportunity for every student to get involved.

I intercollegiate competition. South Alabama has claimed the
