UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA

BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY

COURSE RESERVE POLICY

The Course Reserve Collection

The University of South Alabama Biomedical Library makes it possible for instructors to place on reserve certain materials for their classes. This ensures that all students enrolled in a particular class have ready access to required and recommended materials.

Placing Materials on Reserve

Reserve lists must be submitted on the Request for Reserve form, available at the circulation desk..This form must be filled out completely and legibly.  An incomplete or indecipherable form may result in a delay in processing.  Reserve lists are limited to 30 items per course due to space limitation in Reserve shelving.  Multiple copies and volumes count toward this total.

Persons requesting that items be placed on Reserve must have a patron record that is in good standing in the library's database.  At the beginning of each semester, instructors should submit their Reserve lists at least five working days before the material will be needed.  After the third week of the semester instructors should allow 2 working days for Reserve lists to be processed.  Processing will be done on a first-come, first-served basis.  If any item is unavailable for processing, notification will be made via phone or e-mail.

The library staff will pull library-owned materials as time allows.  However, processing will be completed sooner if the person submitting the list pulls the items and brings them to the Circulation Desk along with the completed Request for Reserve form.  Personal copies should also be brought in with the list.  Personal items may sustain damage or loss.  A bar code and security target will be affixed, which in most cases cannot be removed without damage to the item.  Faculty or their student assistants should make photocopies for Reserve. If Library staff makes copies for an instructor's Reserve files, a $3.00 fee per article will apply.

Materials Which Cannot Be Placed On Reserve

The following items cannot be placed on reserve under any circumstances:

Courtesy copies of textbooks, intended for the instructor's use only.

Books  borrowed  through  Interlibrary  Loan  which  are  checked  out  from  another library.

Removing Items From Reserve

Items may be removed from Reserve before the designated expiration date.  However, all circulation statistics will be lost.
The library will not be responsible for personal copies that are not picked up within two weeks after the expiration date.

Copyright Restrictions on Reserve

USA Biomedical Library's Course Reserve policies are designed to comply with the legal requirements of Title 17 of the United States Code, and prohibit copying not allowed by the law, Fair Use Guidelines, license agreement, or the permission of the copyright holder.  Instructors placing materials on reserve must sign a release form in which they accept all responsibility for copyright compliance.
