Baugh began at USA in 1973 as a professor and chair of Biochemistry. He was named Associate Dean for Basic Medical Sciences in 1976 and Dean of the College of Medicine in 1987. He retired in 1993, but in 1998 put his retirement on hold and returned to USA as Dean.
At USA he was involved in the creation of the Health Services Foundation medical practice plan, the South Alabama Medical Sciences Foundation and PrimeHealth health maintenance organization.
Dr. Baugh was instrumental in obtaining the building and remodeling
for the current location of the Baugh Biomedical Library. As a strong
supporter of the library in his various positions, it is very fitting that
the Biomedical Library be named in his honor.
PDR.net also makes the fulltext of 13 journals published by Medical
Economics available, without charge, online for anyone. Most journals are
from January 1996 to present. The journal titles are: Business & Health,
Contemporary OB/GYN, Contemporary Pediatrics, Contemporary Urology, Drug
Topics, Hospital Pharmacist Report, Internal Medicine, JAAPA Journal of
the American Academy of Physician Assistants, IM Medical Economics, RN,
Office Nurse, Patient Care, and Strategic Medicine. Consumers who wish
to use the Physicians' Desk Reference or Stedman's Medical Dictionary online
must purchase a monthly or yearly subscription for online access, which
costs $9.95/month or $99.95/year.
"MDConsult is a convenient resource for biomedical information. It allows for rapid access to a variety of databases". Dr. Jack DiPalma
MDConsult is the most comprehensive online clinical information resource available. The integrated collection of the most trusted medical books, journals, drug information, and many other resources make it easy for students, physicians, and clinical staff to quickly find answers and stay up-to-date in medicine.
Recently the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) conducted a poll across all levels of medical education regarding technology. In the answer to 'what technology resource has made the biggest difference in your work this year?', MDConsult was the second most frequent information resource mentioned, following only PubMed.
In a recent journal article [Graber, MA; GR Bergus; C York. "Using the World Wide Web to answer clinical questions: how efficient are different methods of information retrieval?" Journal of Family Practice, July 1999, 49(7): 520-524], MD Consult was one of 16 sites, search engines and meta-lists used to answer ten questions. MD Consult was the only source to answer 6 questions. The others ranged from 5 to zero questions answered. MD Consult met all eight Health on the Net (HON) Criteria (guidelines for health information on the web, see http://www.hon.ch/HONcode/Conduct.html), and it averaged the second lowest number of Web pages viewed before finding an answer (2.8, vs. 2.6 for HotBot).
MD Consult is available from any campus hard-wired computer. To access MD Consult, go to http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/mdconsult.htm

PubMed Central, the barrier-free NIH repository for peer-reviewed primary research reports in the life sciences, began accepting journal articles in January 2000.
FREE fulltext can now be viewed in PubMed Central, both as HTML, through your web browser, and as downloadable PDFs. Features include: links from article reference citations to PubMed abstracts, figures sized for on-screen viewing, and support for supplementary information such as data tables, streaming video, and high-resolution images.
Coming within the next few months will be direct links from PubMed search results to the fulltext of articles in PubMed Central, the development of new search engines, and flexible support for new scientific publishing models, such as "electronic-only" journals.
To access PubMed Central go to http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/
This web site has added a Clinical Pharmacology section which includes:
• Investigational Drugs - Drugs "in the pipeline," such as those in Phase III FDA trialsThis site is free and can be accessed at http://imc.gsm.com
• Combination Drugs - Multiple-agent preparations, including many OTC products
• Less Common Drugs - Drugs which are infrequently used or for which there is little information
• Nutraceuticals - Herbs, trace elements, and dietary supplements used in a therapeutic manner
• Nutritional Products - Products given as nutritional supplementation, with component RDA’s and nutrient/drug interactions
Forget the old text-based SOUTHcat, you can access the new SOUTHcat from anywhere in the world through your WWW browser. With it, eligible users can link directly to web versions of journals to which the library subscribes. Not all e-journals will be available off campus. You can perform hyperlinked searches, so when you find a book you’re interested in, you can click on the author’s name to find more by that author. You can also click on a subject to search for more items with that subject heading.
To check your personal account status - how many and which books you have checked out, when they’re due, if you owe fines, the status of books you’ve requested - you can login to SOUTHcat with your patron barcode number. After using this feature, be sure to logoff, so no one else has access to your information.
If you’d like assistance using the new SOUTHcat or want more information, come to the Reference Desk at either site, or contact us by telephone or email (See chart on page 2 for contact information). We can help you get the most from the new system.
To access the library’s new catalog, point your WWW browser to: http://southcat.usouthal.edu
New OCR Software
Our Optical Character Recognition software, OmniPage Pro 10,
is the latest in OCR technology. With this software Media Production
Services can scan your pages and convert them to editable text. This
eliminates the need for saving pages of text as large graphics (and using
huge blocks of memory), or of retyping text in order to make needed
changes. Thus time and money are saved.
New Poster production
Publication Services has acquired a new large format color printer
for printing posters up to 54 inches wide by any reasonable length. The
charges are substantially less than fees changed by outside vendors,
and Media Production Services has teamed up with Publications to provide
even more savings.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health launched a new consumer-friendly database, ClinicalTrials.gov, in February 2000. The database was created to provide patients, families, and the general public with current information about clinical research studies, with the aim of making it the most comprehensive central listing of such. Initially, the database will primarily contain information on studies supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), but will work toward adding those sponsored by other Federal Agencies, the pharmaceutical industry, and private nonprofit organizations.
Users will be able to search for clinical trials by disease or condition,
by sponsor, or use a “Focused Search” page to find studies meeting specific
criteria, such as: location, age group, study phase, and enrollment status.
To reach the ClinicalTrials.gov page, go to http://clinicaltrials.gov
