The Biomedical Library is revising its reserve policy. The changes address copyright compliance, length of time an item remains on reserve, number of items on reserve for a class, and what items can and can not be placed on reserve. Notices are being sent to the deans and to faculty members who regularly place items on reserve in the Medical Center or Campus site of the Biomedical Library. If you would like a copy, call the Biomedical Library circulation desk and ask for one to be sent to you. Or, check the library’s homepage at: http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/circ/reservepolicy.htm for the latest edition of the policy.
As indicated in the chart below, the growth of database usage has grown tremendously in the last six years. The addition of OVID Online with the Journals@OVID database has resulted in a substantial increase during the last year.
Diane Williams has been granted the status of Senior member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP). AHIP is the Medical Library Association’s peer-reviewed professional development and career recognition program. The Academy recognizes the personal investment of time and effort required for exemplary professional performance and for contributions to the association and to the profession.
Gentry Holbert presented a session entitled "Designing Your Own Web Page" at the 15th Annual Southeast Regional CME Symposium. At that same meeting, Judy Burnham presented a session on “Locating CME on the Internet.”
Carol Wright, UMC Supervisor, began her term as President of the Bay Area Library Association.
Several Librarians from the Biomedical Library are taking part in a journal club on licensing electronic resources. The group meets monthly to review and discuss articles on the topic and to review license agreements that have been issued by electronic journal and book publishers.
In the Fall Juried Show of the Watercolor and Graphic Arts Society of Mobile, Lynda Smith Touart, medical illustrator in Media Production Services, was given the Francis Palmer Ward Award. The show was judged by Jere Allan, professor of Painting and Drawing at University of Mississippi. It will hang in the downtown gallery of the Mobile Museum of Art through January 2, 2000.
The National Institutes of Health has announced the development of PubMed Central, a repository that will include content from all the life sciences. PubMed Central will be an online archive for medical research papers with two-tiers -- one that would include articles that have been peer reviewed and one with articles that have been screened but not formerly peer reviewed. Access to PubMed Central will be without charge.
The peer reviewed reports will be sent to PubMed Central by participating
publishers and societies that have overseen the review process. Non-peer
reviewed reports will be submitted to PubMed Central by independent organizations.
Most will be preprints but will include other reports that the organization
feels provides valuable data to the research community.

Funds to purchase books for the library were included in a recent grant received by the College of Nursing. $1600 was made available by the Advanced Practice Gerontological Nurse (APGN) Program, directed by Dr. Norma Doolittle. These funds were used to purchase books in the field of gerontology and geriatric nursing.
When writing grants, remember to include funds to enhance the Biomedical
Library collection.
1998-1999 highlights included the addition of many book and journal titles online. The Biomedical Library has contracted with vendors and publishers to offer library users the latest in online full text resources. A list of electronic publications is available at the BML Homepage at http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/epub.htm. There were over 26,000 searches done on the OVID citation databases alone, plus more than 17,000 full text articles read online or printed. This represents a huge savings in time for BML users, since retrieving an article online and reading or printing it takes a fraction of the time needed to go to the library, check the catalog, find the item on the shelves, and read or photocopy it. It’s a time saver for library staff as well, since there is no need to reshelve or otherwise maintain these volumes.
The College of Medicine Homepage averaged more than 25,000 hits per month, including nearly 3,000 for the Clinical Trials database alone. The Biomedical Library Homepage averaged nearly 12,000 hits per month - including hits from NIH. An analysis of usage shows that interest in the Homepage has become international in scope. During August alone, there were 93 hits from the United Arab Emirates, 691 from Australia, 21 from Bosnia & Herzegovina, 15 from the Czech Republic, 584 Germany, 27 Croatia, 528 Japan, 17 Yugoslavia, 100 from the Russian Federation, and the list goes on to include more than 70 countries world-wide and virtually every state in the USA.
The long search for a replacement for the Libraries’ online catalog has finally come to an end with the selection of the Voyager System produced by Endeavor, Inc. This is a relational database, utilizing Oracle software and is web-based.
The Library initiated a more proactive program to encourage input into collection development from faculty and clinicians from the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health. Each department was assigned a librarian liaison who would keep them informed of new publications and electronic resources and to solicit their input and suggestions.
The Biomedical Library’s outreach activity, SOUTHmed, is now comprised of 11 hospitals, 4 law firms, and 13 individual members. It is expected that services to many of the hospitals and several clinics will expand during the coming year with funding generated by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) grant which was approved in 1999.
The BML’s educational activities continue to expand with numerous classes and training sessions being offered on-site and elsewhere. Internet classes for physicians were conducted throughout the year and proved very popular.
Upgraded computers were ordered to replace the units in the Microcomputer Lab and it is expected that all older units will be upgraded by the end of the 1999/2000 fiscal year. Most units were upgraded to Windows98 software, and Microsoft Office2000 was acquired.
Two new faculty members joined the library staff. Gentry Holbert was hired to replace Mike Perry as Information Services librarian and Coordinator of Education. Ellen Sayed came on board as Information Services Librarian and will carry double duty as Head of Document Delivery. Due to the “incentive” retirement program this year, the Supervisor in Document Delivery retired and, in accordance with University policy, that position has been “frozen” for one year. The BML’s Assistant Director for Systems, a faculty position, remains vacant as well.
Have you ever wished you could:
Please note that this is a big migration from a mainframe system to
a web-based system, and there may be periods when some library holdings
don’t appear on SOUTHcat. During this time, be sure to ask Biomedical
Library staff if you can’t find something. In particular, there may
be a lag time before more recent issues of journal titles appear as received
on SOUTHcat.
After the migration is complete, the new SOUTHcat will have many more
functions and be easier to use than the present system. Watch for
signs in the library about the migration and for news on the Biomedical
Library web page. The new Voyager SOUTHcat is coming soon!
