One new section, Medical Specialties, is being developed in concert with the new library liaison program. Each department in the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health Professions, will have a representative page that will link to the department's page (if they have one), and to other sites of interest. The page will include: links to associations and organizations that might be of interest; electronic publications; major lists; and selected individual sites. Departments may request specific links to be added to these pages by contacting their library liaison, or email the sites to the webmaster at medlib@jaguar1.usouthal.edu. If you have any questions about the Library Liaison program, contact your liaison or Judy Burnham at jburnham@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.

USA Publication Services has acquired a new large format color printer for printing posters up to 54 inches wide by any reasonable length. The charges are substantially less than MPS has been paying outside vendors. MPS has teamed up with Publications to provide even more savings. Several posters have been produced this way so far with quality results.
Roberta Barclay has moved to the Systems Department from the College of Medicine Microcomputer and Multimedia labs. She will be helping keep all computers in the Biomedical Library sites running well. Sally Murray is now managing the College of Medicine Microcomputer Lab and the Multimedia Lab.
If you have any questions about the lab, please contact her at 414-8210 or smurray@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.
The College of Medicine Microcomputer Lab now has Win98 and Microsoft Word. With Win98, the sign-on looks different, but the username and password are the same as for the old setup. There is an FAQ area on the wall answering the most Frequently Asked Questions in the lab - including how to sign on.The Biomedical Library has ordered new computers for the College of Medicine Microcomputer Lab. When they come in, Microsoft Office 2000 with PowerPoint, Word, and Excel will be added.
There is a new multimedia program that may be used in the Multimedia
Lab - Interactive Pathology Laboratory from UAB. Some of the Multimedia
Lab computers have been out of order recently from users adding and deleting
programs. Ask library staff if you need help. Please do not change anything
on the library computers.
Philip Wexler, of the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program spoke at a recent meeting of the Alabama Health Libraries Association. Wexler noted that the TOXNET system, with its new Web interface, offers an easy-to-use, consolidated set of files, including peer-reviewed data and support references, in toxicology and related fields. Several of its files would be of special interest to practicing physicians. Among these is the Hazardous Substances Data Bank which includes information on antidote and emergency medical treatment, human toxicity, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, clinical laboratory methods, and environmental and occupational exposures. The TOXLINE file of some 3 million bibliographic references is an ideal source for keeping up with current literature in the physician's area of interest. With TOXNET, rural health practitioners have a way to dramatically shrink their distance and time to a major information resource that may help in the care of patients suffering from chemical exposures, in the home, workplace, or ambient environment.
You can reach TOXNET at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/servlets/simple-search.
OVID's AutoAlert service allows you to save your searches on OVID
and it will send you the search results to you by email every time OVID
is updated. OVID updates its databases once a week. Follow the following
steps to save an AutoAlert.
1. Do your search on OVID*.
2. Click "Save Search History."
3. Click "as an AutoAlert (SDI)."
4. Under General Parameters, type a search name.
5. Type in your email address in the box of Recipient's Email Address.
6. Type in your Email subject.
7. Check the Output Format you want to receive under Fields.
8. Check the Citation Format. (If you use Reference Manager or EndNote
to manage your references, check "Reprint/Medlars.")
*If you want to view the table of contents of particular journals,
you may do a search for only the journal title(s).
Are you still spending hours typing bibliographies, or using index cards to organize their references? Do it the easy way--by using EndNote. Use EndNote for Windows and Macintosh to manage your bibliographies.
By using EndNote, you can search bibliographic databases such as Ovid databases, PubMed or Internet Grateful Med directly form EndNote. You may also import your search result to EndNote databases from OVID or other databases. You can also create an unlimited number of databases of your own and organize references in a database.
Most important, EndNote creates bibliographies automatically in your word processor. You can create 1-step bibliographies in Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. Using EndNote, you can insert citations and format bibliographies from within Word and WordPerfect. EndNote creates bibliographies in a variety of word processors: Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, AmiPro, AppleWorks (Mac), FrameMaker (Mac), WriteNow, Nisus, MacWrite, RTF, and HTML. EndNote comes with more than 300 bibliographic styles for a variety of journals. Each style can be modified, or you can create new styles.
Please contact Jie Li, 471-7855 or jli@jaguar1.usouthal.edu
to attend an EndNote workshop or arrange an EndNote workshop for your department.
