Electronic publications are becoming increasingly important to the health sciences literature. In the coming months, the Biomedical Library will focus on acquiring and cataloging electronic tools of use to our clients.
Purchase and licensing of electronic resources involves a much different process than purchase of print materials. There are many types of electronic licenses, but they can usually be categorized as one of the following:
Another consideration is the archival rights, that is, if the Biomedical Library retains ownership of the document once the subscription has ceased. Download and interlibrary loan restrictions are also reviewed. Library staff review license agreements to select those that are most beneficial for the needs of our user population.
The Biomedical Library is in the process of adding electronic titles
to the online catalog. Some of these titles are in addition to the print
title, and some are unique electronic titles. Currently, a "cut-and-paste"
method must be used to access the electronic copy from SOUTHcat, the online
catalog. Once the new web-based online catalog is available, access will
be available with "point-and-click". The electronic journals may also be
accessed from the Biomedical Library's homepage at http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/epub.htm
by clicking on the title of interest. If you have a title you would like
to suggest, please contact Judy Burnham, 460-6888, jburnham@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.
A hands-on Internet Workshop for Physicians will be held by the Biomedical Library on August 18, 1999 5pm-10pm. The objectives of the course are:
The instructors for this class are Judy Burnham, Gentry Holbert and Sally Murray. Cost is $50 which includes dinner and up to four hours Category 1 CEU. ($10 discount for individual SOUTHMED members) For information or registration contact Judy Burnham, 460-6888.e-mail and discussion groups navigating the Internet using browsers using search engines to locate information on the Internet using bookmarks major medical sites on the Internet evaluation of webpages

On April 12, the National Library of Medicine unveiled its new web catalog, called LOCATORplus, which will allow anyone with Internet access to find out what books, journals, audiovisuals, manuscripts, and other items are contained in the world's largest medical library.
Many exciting new features will be available via LOCATORplus. Customers using the catalog from the Web can search by author, MeSH term, title, conference name, keyword and many other specific fields, and can then e-mail the results to themselves. Current receipts of both serial and monograph materials will be displayed along with information about material which is on order or available electronically. Hotlinks to online journals will be available from many records. Direct access to a variety of other resources will be available from LOCATORplus including MEDLINE, MEDLINEplus, Images of the History of Medicine, TOXNET, HSTAT, and other U.S. medical catalogs.

The Biomedical Library recently had the pleasure of working with Serhiy Lapchenko, an international visiting librarian from the Volyn Regional Scientific Medical Library in the Ukraine. Serhiy accompanied a team of Ukrainian physicians who are visiting on behalf of Dr. Wladimir Wertelecki's grant to support the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program.
Serhiy spent more than 20 hours of observation and training time in individual departments the Biomedical Library, both Campus and Medical Center Sites, and the University Library. He received training in the use of National Library of Medicine databases, PubMed and Internet Grateful Med, Web genetics sites, and computer programs such as Ariel, PowerPoint, PageMaker, and WordPerfect. Utilizing his new knowledge, Serhiy began creating a teaching program for physicians and librarians back in his home town of Lutsk, which is situated in the northwestern part of Ukraine in the Volyn Region.
The visiting Ukrainian team has created 21 fact sheets for Ukrainian physicians concerning diagnosis aspects of the most common birth defects as well as created a Web site. The demo Web site is available at http://www.usouthal.edu/genetics/ukrmain.htm .(no longer available)
Serhiy was excited to learn that Biomedical Libraries Director, Tom Williams, is facilitating the donation of USA Biomedical Library books, slides, and other materials necessary for their work in the Ukraine.
Serhiy plans to stay in touch with the Department of Medical Genetics and the Biomedical Library, for he feels that such assistance "will make an invaluable contribution to our Birth Defects Program."
The Biomedical Library wishes to thank the following individuals who have contributed materials.
Journals@OVID
Journals@OVID has been added to the online tools available to the Biomedical
Library clients. Journals@ OVID is a single database that contains more
than 320 key sci-tech-med journal titles for the last six years. Previously
the Biomedical Library had access to 80 full-text titles via the OVID system.
Links will be provided to these journals. You can now search all full-text
titles at once rather than searching each subset individually. For further
information contact the Reference Desk at either site of the Biomedical
Library
"Good information is the best medicine", states well know heart specialist Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. He further stated that "immediate access to current medical research information is as critical as the biopsy and the x-ray have been in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Not only health professionals, but also consumers should have the most recent medical information at their fingertips."
Membership in SOUTHmed can provide access to current, timely medical information for health care professionals in the hospital setting or in private practice. Classes in accessing medical information via the Internet or searching MEDLINE are another benefit of membership. Membership also meets the knowledge based information requirements for Standard IX of the JCAHO Standards.
The Biomedical Library exhibited at the Alabama Hospital Association
Annual Meeting in Birmingham in June. During the exhibit, demonstrations
were available on Internet Grateful Med and PubMed as well as Internet
resources dealing with health care administration. Information on the SOUTHmed
Information System was also made available at the exhibit.
