There are six new pathfinders on the Biomedical Library's Web page under "Resources and Services." These subject/discipline specific lists of select resources include print and online links to sources evaluated by a librarian for their content, currency, authority, and organization. An updated SOUTHcat tutorial is available on the same Web page.
The latest pathfinders cover the topics of AIDS, cancer, drug information,
health statistics, indexing and abstracting tools, and nursing resources.
Print copies of all pathfinders are available in the Biomedical Library.
Additional topics for pathfinders can be requested by contacting the Reference
Desk at 6-7044 or medlib@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.
Two new online products are available from any computer using a University IP number. Go to http://southmed.usouthal.edu/com/new.htm to access the resources.
Harrison's Online, the online version of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, makes the updated 14th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine completely searchable.
Important features in Harrison's Online are: full search capabilities of the new 14th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine
Cochrane Library databases contain Systematic Reviews, Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, Controlled Trials Register and Review Methodology Database. Access Cochrane from the College of Medicine homepage by clicking "New" from a campus computer.
The aim of the database is "to help reviewers make good decisions about
the methods they use relative to the specific healthcare problems that
they address, rather than dictate arbitrary standards. The guidelines provided
here are intended to help reviewers to be systematic and explicit (not
mechanistic) about the questions they pose and how they derive answers
to those questions. These guidelines are not a substitute for good judgment."
In order to locate the best possible evidence when teaching and practicing clinical medicine:
Evidence-based healthcare web sites can be accessed at: http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/ebm.htm
The University homepage has recently updated their page on healthcare at http://www.southalabama.edu/healthcare.html There are links to sites within the University community as well as to the National Library of Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Health - CNN, and many more.
The USA Health Network has maps to the hospitals, physician information
and information about each of the USA hospitals. Children's and Women's
Hospital now has a Web Nursery at http://www.southalabama.edu/webnursery/.
As of October 1, 1998 there is a 20 articles per month limit of "free" Interlibrary loans from other libraries. After that a charge of $5 per article PLUS any associated royalty will be assessed.
There is also a limit of 20 in-house document delivery items (something
is at the campus library and the person wants it delivered/faxed to UMC
or vice-versa). After that the charged is $3 each.
A hands-on Internet Workshop for Physicians will be held by the Biomedical Library on May 11, 1999, 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. The objectives of the course are:
Jie Li has received notification of renewal of her membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) at the Senior level. The AHIP is the peer-reviewed professional development program of the Medical Library Association.
Gentry Holbert, Education Coordinator, will present a session entitled, "Determining Quality Web Sites for Research: A Review of Evaluation Criteria for Quality Healthcare Information" at the April Clinical Education Sessions of the Alabama State Nurses' Association annual conference, FACES `99 in Montgomery.
Six librarians from the Biomedical Library are taking part in a Journal Club on Evidence-Based Health Care. By reviewing articles on the topic each month, the librarians are gaining a better understanding of this topic. Evidence based health care is an approach to health care practice in which the clinician is aware of the evidence that bears on the clinical practice, and the strength of that evidence.
Judy Burnham and Sally Murray took part in a joint project of the Alabama Health Libraries Association and the Network for Academic Libraries. This project involves teaching Internet classes throughout the state for librarians at junior colleges and technical schools with nursing or allied health programs. Judy and Sally taught classes in Mobile and Montgomery for this project. Jie Li, President of ALHeLA, was instrumental in developing this project.
Judy and Sally also conducted a session at the annual meeting of the
Alabama Library Association in April on "Health Resources on the Web."
The session was geared to public librarians.
"MedicalStudent.com" is a personalized digital library of authoritative medical information for all students of medicine by Michael P. D'Alessandro, M.D., the Director, Architect and Digital-Librarian-In-Chief: Virtual Hospital and Virtual Children's Hospital. MedicalStudent.com provides free access to medical textbooks in various disciplines and can be found at http://medicalstudent.com.

textbooks, multimedia teaching files, grand rounds, lectures and conferences.
There are now over 300 full text journals available on the Biomedical Library Homepage at http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/e-jour.htm.
John Wiley Journals has increased the count by almost 50 titles. The Wiley titles are available from any hardwired campus computer. Each individual registers once (for the entire set, not each title) and creates a password to use. Once registered, a user clicks the 'LOGIN' prompt to go to Wiley. Wiley allows users to set up their own hotlist of titles on their own homepage. Some of the new titles are: American Journal of Hematology, American Journal of Medical Genetics, Cancer, Cytometry, Genetic Epidemiology, Head and Neck, Journal of Cellular Physiology, Journal of Pathology, Microsurgery, Prenatal Diagnosis, and Statistics in Medicine.
There are some other publications that might be of interest at the bottom
of the Electronic Publications page under the heading "Books and Other
Publications". The AAMC Publications web site has some full text documents
available, including the U.S. Medical School Faculty, 1998. The AAMC Fact
Sheet is also online. It's purpose is "to provide brief summaries of various
works in progress that examine the impact of the environment on the missions
of medical schools and teaching hospitals and
highlight innovative approaches to managing change in the academic
medical community."
The Biomedical Library has established a Liaison Program that will enable better communication with the departments in the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health. A librarian has been assigned to each department and will soon be in contact to make an initial presentation at the department meeting. The liaison will receive input from the department regarding suggestions for additions to the collection. The liaison will also work closely with the department on library instruction and on development of the Biomedical Library web page.
The "Copyright in the New Millennium" teleconference will be held May
21, 1999 11-2pm in Room 5 of the University Library. The teleconference
will address issues that libraries and librarians need to understand about
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Copyright Term Extension.
Often nursing students, staff or faculty need to find information on
nursing instruments. CINAHL provides citations to research using these
instruments and often provides the full-text of the instrument or the source
for obtaining the instrument. For assistance in using CINAHL to locate
these tools, ask at the Reference Desk.
Springhill Memorial Hospital is the newest member of the SOUTHmed Information Network. The USA Biomedical Library will supplement the resources of the library at Springhill Memorial by providing photocopies of articles, offering classes in locating health related materials and other services.
Membership in SOUTHmed can provide access to current, timely medical information for health care professionals in the hospital setting or in private practice. Classes in accessing medical information via the Internet or searching MEDLINE are another benefit of membership. Membership also meets the knowledge based information requirements for Standard IX of the JCAHO Standards.
The Biomedical Library exhibited at the meeting of the Alabama Occupational
Therapy Association in Orange Beach, AL in March. During the exhibit, demonstrations
were held on Internet Grateful Med and PubMed as well as other resources
offered by the National Library of Medicine. Information on the SOUTHmed
Information System was also made available at the exhibit. The Biomedical
Library will also exhibit at the Alabama Hospital Association in Birmingham
in June.
The Biomedical Library Biofeedback, a publication of the University of South Alabama Biomedical Library, is published at irregular intervals. Editor: Judy Burnham. Contributors to this issue were Judy Burnham, Gentry Holbert, Jie Li, Sally Murray, and Anne Romano.
