COLLEGE OF MEDICINE HISTORICAL ROOM UPDATE

New tables and chairs have been ordered for the College of Medicine Historical Room. Delivery is expected in late January. Plans call for the room to house an historical collection of medical books and medical artifacts. The room is available for meetings, receptions, etc. For further information and reservations, contact Tom Williams, Director, 460-6885.

NEW CD-ROMS IN MULTIMEDIA LAB

Three new programs have been added to the Anatomy collection, utilizing the "visible human male data" commissioned by NIH and executed by Victor Spitzer and David Whitlock. One title, The Complete Visible Human Male, is a controller CD-ROM working with a laser disc containing the data and a set of CD-ROMS with high resolution graphics of the individual "plates" in the set. Dr. Spitzer and Dr. Whitlock worked on this rendition of the database, which allows one to obtain useful information from the thousands of unlabeled files that can be downloaded from NIH. Another is Virtual Human which allows one to use powerful three dimensional techniques to visualize all aspects of human anatomy from any angle using the Visible Human database. A third program, Interactive Atlas of Clinical Anatomy is a correlation of Dr. Frank Netter's medical illustrations of anatomy with the Visible Human database as well as clinical radiology. Each of these programs offers additional features.

"Interactive Electrocardiography," based on the popular book "Basic Electrocardiography" by Stephen Scheidt, M.D., utilizes Dr. Frank Netter's medical illustrations along with Dr. Scheidt's input and insight to teach the basics of electrocardiography. Four separate training sections cover basic theory and analysis, diagnosis of cardiac rhythms, chamber enlargement, intraventricular conduction defects and myocardial infarction and ischemia.
"Clinical Pharmacology" presents a wealth of reference information on every drug available in the U.S. in an easy-to-use format suitable for teaching. Also included are investigational drugs, i.v. admixtures and nutritional products. All aspects of drug information from adverse reactions to cost are covered. Updates will become available quarterly.

"Essentials of Immunology" presents the basics of host defense mechanisms in a unique manner. The latest advances in immunology are presented in the context of a clinical case, allowing one to access the depth of information one needs. A list of all known immune deficiencies is provided with their clinical presentation, genetic defect (if known), and current therapy. Physiological processes are shown as a continuous process allowing for quick comprehension.

DATABASES AVAILABLE THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY HOMEPAGE

Other than the OVID databases (AIDSLINE, BioethicsLine, CancerLit, CINAHL, HealthSTAR, and MEDLINE) available from the Library's homepage (http://usaovid.usouthal.edu), there are other databases of interest available through the University Library's homepage (http://library.southalabama.edu/). INFOTRAC includes the Health Reference Center. BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS

From October 25 - 28, Jie Li attended the International Conference on New Mission of Academic Libraries in the 21st Century in Beijing, China, where she presented a paper. Librarians from 18 countries attended this meeting. Six conference themes were discussed at the meeting: Mission and Purpose of Academic Libraries in the 21st Century, Library Management and Organizational Structure of the Digital Library, Services and Resource Sharing in the Networked Environment, Management of Electronic Information, Libraries and Distance Learning, and Professional Development and Continuing Education. During the meeting, conference attendants also visited the National Library China and the Tsinghua University Library. Jie Li's paper "Distance education in health sciences and libraries services" has been published in the conference proceedings.

Gentry Holbert has joined the library faculty as Information Services/Education Coordinator at the Biomedical Library. She will be responsible for teaching and coordinating classes on online and computer resources as well as providing assistance in the Reference Department. She comes to Mobile from Washington, D.C. where she was the Manager of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Information Center. Prior to that, she held positions as Electronic Services Librarian at USA's University Library and Head of Reference Services at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Kathy Corner has joined the Circulation Department, at the campus site, as a Library Technical Assistant 1. She formerly worked at the University Library.

Lynda Touart, graphic artist in Media Production Services, received Honorable Mention in the Graphics in the Watercolor and Graphic Art Society exhibit, now showing at the downtown gallery of the Mobile Museum of Art.

The Biomedical Library held its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive in November to benefit the Bay Area Food Bank. A barrel was placed in the lobby of the campus site and 132 pounds of food was donated.

The Biomedical Library, Media Production Services, and the Department of Pathology participated in the Lee National Denim Day on October 9.
