DONATIONS
The Biomedical Library would like to thank Mrs. Christine Kelly for a recent donation that helped to expand the Biomedical Library's book collection.
COLLEGE OF MEDICINE HOMEPAGE UPDATE
Dr. Benjamin Estrada, Pediatrics has started a Pediatrics Infectious Disease Newsletter called 'The Bug'. There is an email version sent out the second Friday of each month and a web version that resides at http://southmed.usouthal.edu/com/thebug/.
Three College of Medicine departments have created homepages this year:
FULL-TEXT ELECTRONIC JOURNALS
Many publishers have created electronic versions of their journals for the World Wide Web. Until recently, most were free trial subscriptions but now more and more are for paid subscribers only. The Biomedical Library is subscribing to some electronic journals listed at http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/e-jour.htm for our patrons benefit. Keep checking back on our homepage for more titles as we add to the list.
Most of these journals can be accessed from any computer on campus with a campus IP address. Here is a list of some of our most recent subscriptions.
TABLE OF CONTENTS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB
In addition to the USA page mentioned above, below is a list of WWW pages that include table of contents for journals:
UnCover is a database of current article citations taken from over 17,000 multidisciplinary journals. Searching the UnCover databases is free. Users may also sign up to use UnCover Reveal, an automated alerting service that delivers the table of contents to your email box, for $25 a year. For more information, see http://uncweb.carl.org/.
Other publishers that offer free table of contents by e-mail include:
In October, Tom Williams assisted by Sally Murray presented a paper at the annual meeting of Southern Chapter/MLA titled "Internet Security: Big Brother MIGHT be Watching." In May they will present another paper on privacy at the Medical Library Association Annual meeting, "Internet Privacy: An Oxymoron?" Jie Li will present a paper titled "Distance Learning in Medical Education" and a poster "Comparison of Search Engines' Performance in Searching of Health Information: Evaluations and Recommendations" at that same meeting.
As a co-instructor, Judy Burnham is teaching a series of Internet training classes for the Alabama Health Sciences Libraries Association. A class was held in Tuscaloosa in February and another will be in Auburn in April.
WWW SITE OF NOTE
HealthGate now offers a Diagnostic Procedures Database. The database explains 295 medical procedures, covering major aspects of each procedure, including procedure name, indications and contraindications, description, patient preparation, methods and interpretation, with illustrations. There is no charge for use of this database. The URL is http://www.healthgate.com/HealthGate/free/dph/static/index.html
EVALUATION OF WWW SITES
It is estimated that 50% of WWW sites are mounted by organizations or individuals who may provide biased information. Therefore, it is important for the user to evaluate sites for reliability. Using the following checklist, one can determine the value of a WWW site:
With the exploding amount of information available over the web, medical information is becoming increasingly available. A number of clinical trial sites are now accessible:
SOUTHmed UPDATE
The Biomedical Library would like to welcome the newest member of SOUTHmed, the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center Medical Library.
Library personnel have started to make site visits at the SWAHEC hospitals that are SOUTHmed members: Vaughn-Jackson Memorial Hospital, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital, Washington County Infirmary, Stabler Memorial Hospital, Atmore Community Hospital, Monroe County Hospital, Thomas Hospital and South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. For hospitals, membership in the SOUTHmed Information Network meets the criteria for provision of library services under the JCAHO Management of Information standard. Included in the library services for hospitals are on-site consultations (which can be used in preparation for a JCAHO accreditation site visit); training classes in accessing medical information, via databases (i.e., MEDLINE) and the Internet; full access to the resources, electronic and print, of both sites of the Biomedical Library; use of the USA Biomedical Library Homepage as a gateway with links to a wide range of Internet resources as well as full-text resources; online searching; and photocopy services for journal owned by the Biomedical Library. Other fee-based benefits of SOUTHmed include document delivery of titles not owned by the Biomedical Library (not available at all to non-members) and access to the full MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. SOUTHmed members also have access to the full range of services offered by the College of Medicine's Media Production Services.
On March 30, Judy Burnham presented a session on the Internet for the
AACN in Mobile.
For further information on joining SOUTHmed or if interested in arranging
for a meeting presentation, contact Judy Burnham, 471-7855.
