COLLEGE OF MEDICINE HOMEPAGE
The Biomedical Library is proud to present the College of Medicine Homepage. The address is http://southmed.usouthal.edu. There is a button bar along the left side of the page to help navigation. The following buttons enable jumping from one section to another.
There
are two options on the ‘Search' page. Search the College of Medicine and
Biomedical Library Homepages, or search the Internet using Excite. The
local pages are re-indexed once per month.n
The
‘COM Departments' page has links to the COM departments that have created
Web pages and it also has links to catalog information for those departments
that haven't created an individual page. There are currently eight departments
with their own homepages.
Next
is a direct link to the Biomedical Library Homepage. There are subject
lists, electronic publications, instructions to authors, and much more
to help COM faculty, staff, and students.
The
College of Medicine newsletter, The Beat, is archived on the COM Homepage.
The earliest issue available on the web is from October, 1994.
Both
COM faculty and COM students are listed on the new homepage. The faculty
page is divided into departments with faculty names and e-mail addresses
below.
The
student list is divided by class and has the student usaovid e-mail addresses
listed.
The
Biomedical Library has created a page of ‘Other Resources.' FREIDA, the
College of Medicine Electives Booklet, Search Tools for the Internet, and
a link to the USA General Library are all on this page. There are two NEW
items on this page - ‘Medical News on the Internet' and the web version
of OVID! The Medical News on the. Internet includes American Medical News,
CNN Health, Physician's Weekly, Your Health Daily from the New York Times
as well as some general news sources and weather pages.
The
‘New' page will be the place to check for updates and new links and sites
to the COM homepage. Finally there is a link to the University of South
Alabama Homepage.
FAX SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE
Always looking for ways to say "yes" to library users, the library has set up a fax sending service. For individuals affiliated with the Biomedical Library, the fees are $.50/page (minimum of $2.00) for all numbers with a 334 area code and $1.00/page (minimum of $3.00) for all other numbers. Fees for unaffiliated individuals are slightly higher. Requests are taken at the Circulation Desk in each site of the Biomedical Library. If you have questions, please contact the library.
INTERLIBRARY LOANS ADDS REQUEST FORMS TO HOMEPAGE
Since the beginning of the library, patrons have been able to fill out a paper form to request an item not in our collection. A few years ago the Document Delivery department began to take requests by fax and via a template on the jaguar1. Now they are adding a form to the homepage so that requests can be sent to the library from home or office. To find the form from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine homepage click the Biomedical Library box, and then click on Biomedical Library Resources and Services. Several different forms have been created. Click on the one that describes best who you are (COM, Allied Health graduate student, etc.). There are no additional fees for submitting requests to the library using these forms--the same fees are in effect for all photocopy and interlibrary loan requests regardless of method used to place the request. If you have questions, please contact the library.
BOOK SALE!
Watch for notices of the upcoming book sale in the Biomedical Library. Recent and vintage textbooks will be sold as well as non-medical books. DONATIONS of textbooks, paperbacks, novels, etc. would be greatly appreciated. If you have books to donate please call Pat Rodgers at 460-6888 or simply drop off at the library (either site). We expect to have the sale in late September or October.

INTERNET RESOURCES This class is designed to give a basic knowledge
of using the Internet in medical research. Classes may be geared to using
e-mail or the World Wide Web as tools at the request of students. E-mail
classes demonstrate the use of Pine mailer commands, netiquette, and discussion
groups. World Wide Web classes include surfing and searching using a networked
browser. This session will cover using various search engines such as Yahoo,
Webcrawler, Lycos and InfoSeek to find medical resources on the Internet.

GRATEFUL MED Grateful Med is the National Library of Medicine searching software for accessing the MEDLARS databases (such as MEDLINE) in either an IBM compatible or Macintosh environment. The class will cover searching MEDLARS databases by using Grateful Med. Classes in using Grateful Med are available from the Biomedical Library if requested by an individual or group. Please call 460-7044 to reserve a place in a class at the Campus Site, or 471-7855 to reserve a place in a class at the UMC Site. Send email to medlib@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.
SYSTEMS UPDATE
The WWW interface for OVID, called OVIDWeb is now installed. This allows the user to search the OVID databases using the familiar web browser of their choice, and provides a much more graphical and robust interface to OVID than the now-discontinued OVID Windows GUI program. OVIDWeb is also the first stage of the upgrade to the Java version of OVID. The text-based telnet version of OVID will remain available as well. To access OVIDWeb, simply point your browser to http://usaovid.usouthal.edu and login with your regular user name and password. After October 1, access to MEDLINE and CINAHL via OVID will not be available without a password. Password applications are available at the Circulation Desk of both sites of the Biomedical Library.
Speaking of passwords, all public access computers in the Campus Biomedical site now require users to login with their own unique user name and password. The computers at UMC will shortly follow suit. The instructions for logging on are shown on the screen of each computer: the user's login name consists of the first and middle initial, the entire last name, plus the last three numerals of the student's ID number, or the faculty/staff person's SS number. After logging in the first time, the user must choose a password. Only College of Medicine students will find it possible to login in the COM Lab. In addition to providing greater security for our computer system, the new logins will enable us to gather data on computer usage, and to monitor printer use. Due to the huge increases in paper usage and costs, it will probably be necessary in the future to charge for printing.
COMING SOON TO MEDIA PRODUCTION SERVICES (formerly LEARNING RESOURCES).....
CD-R Mastering Services for archiving data sets and transferring image files and media related projects on CD's will soon be added to the services of Media Production Services. The date of operation will be announced.
BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS
Judy Burnham was co-presentor in a June workshop in Montgomery for local physicians. The workshop was sponsored by the Alabama Health Libraries Association.
The Biomedical Library has recently received two subcontracts from the Southeastern Atlantic Region of the National Libraries of Medicine. One subcontract ($1000) supplied funding for Internet training classes for hospital librarians. Two series of classes were offered in August -- Overview and Advanced. A total of 23 people attended one or both classes. The second subcontract ($3000) will supply funding for exhibiting at two state conventions -- the Alabama State Nurses Association in October 1997 and the Alabama Physical Therapy Association in May 1998. Judy Burnham is the principal investigator of both subcontracts.
Judy Burnham recently attended the annual meeting of the Alabama Health
Libraries Association in Lake Guntersville. At the meeting Jie Li was elected
Vice President of the group. She will be responsible for program planning
for the 1998 meeting. Diane Williams will serve as the Editor of Synapse,
the association newsletter. Also, Judy Burnham was give the ALHeLA Achievement
Award. This award, which has been given three times in its seven year history,
recognizes outstanding contributions to the association and to the field
of medical librarianship.
Imagine going to a site and finding they have gathered personalized news information for you on the topic of your choice! Researchers may want to have news articles that mention a particular gene or disease waiting for them while administrators may want information on HMOs or Medicaid clipped and ready.
This service exists on the Internet today - for free. Excite has a service called ‘NewsTracker'. It is an Internet news clipping service. Individuals may create up to 20 different custom topics, and at the NewsTracker page they can look at all of the news items retrieved. It searches over 300 magazines and newspapers on the Web and does it a few times each day.
To set up a custom topic, go to http://nt.excite.com (this link is no longer working 1/3/01) and click on Personalize Your News. This will begin the set-up process. The first page is Create Topics where a title for the topic is typed in followed by the actual search query. Look at the left border where search tips will appear and change for some very good tips on how to create a better query.
Once the query is accepted, a screen will appear asking for the local zip code, an e-mail address and password. The zip code will allow NewsTracker to put the local time an article appears. The e-mail address and password make it possible for people to get their personal clippings from different computers.
Users may suggest any free Internet journals or newspapers that they would like to see NewsTracker include. They plan to make 'for fee' journals and newspapers available for a fee at a later time. One last suggestion is to bookmark the page http://nt.excite.com (this link is no longer working 1/3/01) to make it easier to return to the site.
USING BOOKMARKS IN NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR VERSION 3.0
World Wide Web browsers have a shortcut to mark sites to go to quickly. In Netscape this feature is called Bookmarks. To mark a site presently being viewed, click on Bookmarks in the Netscape menu bar, then Add Bookmark. To go to a site already marked, click on Bookmarks. Menu items are listed first, and below these items is a list of bookmarked locations. Click on any item from the list to go to that site. Folders show up with an arrow to the right of them. To see the list of items in a folder, click on the arrow to the right.
To be really useful bookmarks must be manipulated, so they can be organized, changed, or items delete if no longer used or obsolete. To work with bookmarks in this way, go to the Bookmark Window. Click on Bookmarks, then Go to Bookmarks, and the Bookmark Window will pop up. To go to a location in the Bookmark Window, double click on the item.
Folders can be created to organize bookmarks, by first marking the item below which the folder should appear. Click on Item, then Insert Folder, and type the title for the folder. To create a bookmark, mark the item below which the bookmark should appear or mark a folder in which it should appear, then click on Item, and Insert Bookmark. Type the title for your bookmark on the top line and the location on the second line. Both bookmarks and folders can also be moved in the list by dragging them to new locations. To arrange folders and bookmarks alphabetically, click on a folder, then click on Item, and Sort Bookmarks. To edit a bookmark or folder, click on the item to edit, click on Item, then Properties, and make any changes. To delete an existing bookmark or folder, click on the item, click Edit, then Delete. The highlighted item will be deleted. (To undo any changes made in the Bookmarks Window, immediately go to Edit, then Undo.)
Use File, then Save As to save a bookmark file to disk. This allows bookmarks to be saved on a disk to use at other computers and to have as a backup. Also multiple bookmark files can be saved on the hard drive, so that different ones can be used for different types of WWW use. To open a bookmark file, click on File, then Open, and select the desired bookmark file.
