BIOFEEDBACK: Biomedical Library Newsletter
New Series Fall 1995 Issue #29
EXPANDED LIBRARY SERVICES, ONLINE RESOURCES AND COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES
FOCUS OF NEW LIBRARY DIRECTOR
Tom Williams joined the Biomedical Library as Director, effective September
1, 1995. Most recently, Tom was Associate Director for Systems and Access
Services at the Louis Calder Memorial Library, University of Miami School
of Medicine. Tom brings strong background in all aspects of library services
and has unique experience in implementing online systems for libraries.
Tom will use this experience to improve and expand services at the USA
Biomedical Library. One of his first goals is to install a sophisticated
network that will provide 24-hour access to MEDLINE, CINAHL, and other
bibliographic databases, as well as a myriad of electronic products and
resources. Plans are well under way as are plans for the Biomedical Library's
Homepage presence on the World Wide Web.
Another goal is to expand library services to the community. In addition
to providing service to off campus USA sites such as Doctor's, Knollwood,
etc., services will be offered to individuals and institutions, on a fee-basis,
in the surrounding communities. Watch for more information on "SouthNet"
as it develops.
ASSISTANT DIRECTORS NAMED
To better position itself for the challenges to come with online systems,
expanded services and new programs, the Biomedical Library has gone through
some reorganization.
Pat Rodgers has been named Assistant Director for Technical Services
and Systems. In this capacity, Pat will be responsible for the day to day
management of both departments and will oversee, along with the new Director,
the implementation of new systems, hardware and software.
Geneva Bush has been named Assistant Director for Public Services and
Education. All public services departments, Circulation, Document Delivery
and Reference, have been combined into one division to be headed by Geneva.
Additionally, she will be responsible for the coordination of all educational
activities for the Biomedical Library.
Judy Burnham has been named Assistant Director for Regional Services.
Judy will continue to coordinate library activities at the UMC location
as well as all other USA affiliated hospital sites. Additionally, she will
lead the library's outreach efforts by coordinating services to area unaffiliated
hospitals, corporations, law firms and others who may have need of biomedical
library services and resources.
BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY STATISTICS
The recent Institutional Self Study of the College of Medicine, prepared
for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education reported some interesting
facts about the Biomedical Library
-
a 1992-93 study of COM faculty publications indicated that 93.5% of the
journals cited were owned by the Biomedical Library.
-
152,641 items were circulated during the 1994-95 academic year. 5,664 items
were borrowed from other libraries, accounting for 3.5% of the total transactions.
-
the Biomedical Library ranks 73rd out of 141 medical schools in North America
in square footage assigned, 102nd in seating available, and 82nd in workstations
available. These rankings are well above the ranks for number of medical
students and faculty served.

BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY FACULTY AND STAFF NEWS
Geneva Bush and Judy Burnham attended the Alabama Health Libraries Association
Annual Meeting in Auburn. During this meeting, Judy completed her term
as President of the Association and Jie Li was elected Member-at- Large
for the 1996 year. Bonnie Seibert, Secretary, has received her A.A. degree
from Phillips Junior College in Business Administration. Joyce Radcliff,

CURRENT CONTENTS/CLINICAL MEDICINE
The Medical Center site has a current subscription to Current Contents
to Clinical Medicine on CD-ROM. This database indexes the table-of-contents
page for major clinical medicine journals, covering such disciplines as
anesthesiology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, radiology, pediatrics
and nephrology. A search can be conducted by author or subject.
TEXTBOOK ERROR
The Summer Issue of Biofeedback reported an error in a textbook published
by W. B. Saunders. The correct title of the textbook is Maternal Fetal
Medicine. The chapter title is "Maternal Hematologic Disorders" ( p. 925).
The text incorrectly lists the dosage of desmopressin acetate injection
in milligrams and should be in micrograms. The correct dose is 0.3mcg/kg.
The error has been noted in the copy owned by the Biomedical Library. If
you own this publication, be sure and note this error in your text.
Another error has been noted in the Chiron Therapeutics' Cancer Therapy
Protocols Book. Two reports from the USP Reporting Program noted errors
involving therapy with cisplatin.
RETRACTION/ERRATA
The Biomedical has established a policy to identify articles that have
been retracted either by the editor of a journal or by the author. These
are articles that are based on fraudulent research, either deliberately
falsified or based on unsubstantiated data. These articles will be stamped
with the retraction information noted. Additionally, a list of the retracted
articles will be kept on reserve at both locations so faculty can check
their bibliographies before submitting for publication. 210 articles in
the MEDLINE database have been identified as retracted articles.
UNCOVER TABLE OF CONTENTS SERVICE
The UnCover Company is now offering a table of contents service for individuals
electronically. The company scans and stores the table of contents for
thousands of journals, include medical titles. The charge for this service
is $20.00 per year for up to 50 journal titles. The table of contents is
sent directly to the individual's e-mail account.
To request this service, telnet to UnCover: database.carl.org. The service
can be billed to a credit card. If you need more help in establishing this
service, contact a Reference Librarian.
