The ALHeLA Annual Conference was held at StillWaters
Conference Center in Dadeville, Alabama on August 12-13, 1999. The Center
is located on Lake Martin, about 30 minutes from Auburn, 60 minutes from Montgomery,
and 90 minutes from Birmingham, on Alabama Route 49. The conference had 29 attendees
including the student award winner.
On Thursday 22 attendees enjoyed two half day CE courses. Lynn M. Fortney,
Biomedical Division, EBSCO , and Chuck Leachman, Sales Manager, EBSCO
hosted a session on The Use and Management of Electronic Serials, a subject
near and dear to all of our hearts currently!
Also, Philip Wexler, Technical Information Specialist, Toxicology and
Environmental Health Information Program, NLM, presented a demonstration of the Internet
toxicology databases available from NLM. The new interface, with the latest
databases configuration, was newly released. We were among the first to have
a look at this wonderful new resource!
The keynote speaker on Friday was from a partnership group formed by some representatives
of the CDC, NLM, and NN/LM to address information technologies and public health
education issues. Dennis MacDowell, Director, Division of Media Training
Services, Public Health Practice Program Office - Center for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) discussed knowledge management. And judging from a Grand
Rounds presentation he did earlier this year at UAB's School of Public Health,
you'll be on the edge of your chairs!
StillWaters is a Conference Center and Resort Community on Lake Martin and has
excellent recreational activities available: golfing, swimming, boating, fishing,
kayaking, water sports, and walking trails. A large comfortable conference room
was reserved for the meeting.
