Library Courses

The library teaches some closed instruction sessions as part of the curriculum of the colleges we support. Librarians also offer some for-credit courses to the colleges. For more information and links to these courses, check out the library courses page.

Open Library Instruction Sessions

These classes are open and free to all University faculty, staff, and students. Advanced registration is required for scheduled courses. Groups or individuals can request instruction in any of the following areas by contacting the library.

  • Internet Basics

    Basic knowledge on utilizing the Internet for medical research including browser navigation, an overview of common search engines, printing & saving tips and look at several important medically-oriented sites.

  • Advantage Internet

    This class is designed to help you navigate the Net more effectively and efficiently. You will examine several major Internet search engines, analyze search results for pertinence,and get tips on evaluating Web sites for accuracy, authority, currency, content and organization. Participants should have a basic knowledge of the Internet.

  • OVID MEDLINE

    Learn to effectively search and retrieve articles using OVID MEDLINE. The class will also cover various techniques for printing and saving search results.

  • CINAHL@EBSCO

    Learn to effectively search and retrieve articles using CINAHL@EBSCO. The class will also cover various techniques for printing and saving search results.

  • Accessing Full-Text Online

    This class provides an overview of the various electronic full-text resources at the USA Libraries including: EBSCO, OVID full-text, ScienceDirect, MDConsult and others. The class will cover tips on how to effectively search and use each of these databases.

  • Clinical Information Resources

    This class provides an overview of the various electronic databases on clinical information available through the Biomedical Library and on the Internet.

  • PubMed/NLM Gateway

    Learn how to search free MEDLINE through the National Library of Medicine's database PubMed. Also, learn to navigate the new NLM Gateway which allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems including MEDLINE/PubMed, OLDMEDLINE, LOCATORplus, AIDS Meetings, HSR Meetings, HSRProj, MEDLINEplus and more.

  • Workshops for Research Assistants & Secretaries

    Learn about the Biomedical Library's resources and services, including remote access, SOUTHcat (the Library's online catalog) searching tips, article retrieval and fact finding. Information includes both print and online resources. Participants will learn to locate information for incomplete citations.

  • Zotero Reference Manager

    Learn how to use Zotero to help systematically organize and arrange your references into uniform bibliographies.

  • Customize-Your-Own

    Classes can be customized to best suit your specific needs. Any of the elements mentioned above, as well as additional information/instruction can be requested for a specially designed session.
