Elective Rotations in the ER

OBJECTIVE - Familiarize senior students with the types, variability and treatment of clinical problems seen in an Emergency Department and LEVEL I Trauma Center.

DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES - Students will work side by side with residents assigned to the Emergency Department. The students will interview and examine patients and recommend appropriate therapy under the supervision of the resident or attending physician. Coverage is provided on a continuing basis by Residents and the Attending faculty of the Department of Medicine, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Emergency Medicine. The supervision of the students will be by the Attending physicians of the Department of Emergency Medicine. In addition, attending physicians from other services will serve as consultants to the physicians in the Emergency Department. The student will rotate shifts. Seminars will include major aspects of emergency medical care. The course will include clinical case reviews.

EVALUATION: - The following aspects of performance will be included for evaluation: Clinical performance will be evaluated by the Emergency Medicine faculty assigned to the Emergency Department during the rotation. Weekly seminar reviews and final performance reviews by faculty will determine overall evaluation rating.

LOCATION: - U.S.A. Medical Center Emergency Department

TIME: - 8:00 a.m., First day of rotation

NOTE: The elective will require 4 weeks full time. Special circumstances requiring split of the rotation will be considered on a case by case basis with written approval required by the course director.
