Summer Research Program for Medical Students
The University of South Alabama College of Medicine Summer Research Program is a 10 week program which allows medical students to gain a better appreciation for biomedical research and the contribution it makes to the applied science that is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. All summer research student receive training in the safe handling of radioisotopes and certification in radiation safety training.  Informative seminars are regularly scheduled on various scientific and clinical topics.

A call for summer research proposals is distributed to all College of Medicine faculty inviting them to submit research proposals that provide a quality research experience for incoming and first year medical students. The merits of the projects are judged by the Student Research  Committee on the basis of a testable hypothesis or objective, basic research methodology and/or clinical study design that can be performed within the ten week period and that will achieve the specific aims of the study. Proposals are evaluated on the hypothesis, study design, and educational value to the student. The summer program offers a variety of research projects ranging from clinical to basic science in nature.

Student Research Day

The culmination of the summer's work is the presentation summary of research findings at
the Annual Medical Student Research Day, as either a poster or oral slide presentation.  Two
students are selected to receive the “Clyde C. Huggins Medical Research Award” in special
recognition of their research presentation. These awardees receive a commemorative plaque and a
$100 cash award.  The awardees are also invited to present their research findings at the National
Student Research Forum held each year in Galveston at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
