Media Production Services (MPS) provides quality and timely products to support teaching, research, patient care, and publications for faculty, students, and staff.

In addition to production services, MPS provides consultation and design support for presentations, exhibits, instructional programs, facilities, or any media-related projects.

You can depend on prompt, responsive service from an experienced staff with a genuine desire to play a supportive role in your work.

ILLUSTRATION AND GRAPHICS

Media Production Services provides a wide range of graphics and illustration to meet your needs.  Our skilled graphics staff has many years of experience enabling us to create quality, original art.  MPS produces anatomical and technical illustrations for medical procedures, typesetting and layout of text and tables, and many types of charts and graphs.

MPS produces computer graphics for digital presentations as well as hard copy banners and posters, either roll-out or mounted.  We create signs and displays for research posters and other exhibits.  Posters can be up to 54 inches wide by any reasonable length.  (Click here to see an example.)

We can create or edit computer presentations for on-screen display, slides, or prints.  Digital image enhancement or manipulation is available for most projects.  We also design and maintain web pages, as well as extras such as custom animations and buttons.   Even if you already have a web site, we can often improve its operation and design.

MPS uses both traditional and digital methods for graphics and illustration to meet your needs.  (For examples of our work, click here.)

Because many graphic needs are difficult to communicate effectively through written instruction or through a second party, we recommend that you arrange for a meeting with the illustrators who will do the work in order to explain your request. This will ensure continuity and avoid confusion.

Before meeting with the illustrator, it would be helpful to consider the following:

  • In what medium will this graphic be used?
  • Are there any guidelines or rules to which strict adherence may be required, i.e., format, dimensions, or type size?
  • Would it be helpful to provide a sketch, photograph, or example?
  • Are there any practical considerations relating to the situation in which this work will be used, i.e., transport, durability, space constraint, etc.?
  • How and when can you be contacted for proofing or consultation?

PHOTOGRAPHY

Media Production Services has modern facilities to produce high quality professional photographs of a variety of subjects. It is our goal to provide prompt, professional photographic services at competitive prices.

Come in and consult with one of our photographers about your next project.  Our photographic services include copy, studio, and field shooting, with a variety of formats in black and white or color.   Because we do our own lab work, we can select the film and processing combination needed to meet your specifications.

Photographic Services Include:

  • Slides from art, books, and other flat materials

  • Field and studio photography

  • Custom, publication-quality black and white printing

  • Film developing

Slidemaking:

For flatwork and duplication, please consider that the quality of the original will, to a great degree, determine the quality of the product you receive.  Graphs, charts, illustrations, and photographs found in journals or other publications were not designed to meet media standards for exchange.  In their printed form they may not be suitable originals   for slides in terms of legibility and technical quality.  Computer-generated originals are not acceptable for all types of slides and prints unless a quality laser printer is used for output.   If you anticipate creating original materials yourself, it would be helpful to consult with our graphics and photography staff, and request more information regarding original artwork and media standards for exchange.

Types of Slides Available: (For examples click here)

  • High Contrast Black and White Negative
-White line or type against a black background
-Produced from original line artwork that has been typeset or laser printed

  • High Contrast Black and White Positive
Black line or type against clear background (original artwork)

  • Continuous Tone Black and White Positive
-Complete tonal range and positive black and white image
-Good if originals are black and white photos, or half-tone prints in publication

  • Color Positive
Normally used to reproduce color in the original, but may be used with filters to add a color tint to black and white originals

  • High Contrast Color Negative
-Color line or text against black background
-Produced from black and white originals

  • Burn-in (Diazo)
-White line or text against a color background
-Use an inter-negative step and color transparency film, instead of true Diazo materials, which will fade with usage
-Allows for a greater selection of backgrounds, including natural images, solid or textured colors, or custom backgrounds designed specifically for you
-High quality black and white linework  required to produce acceptable burn-ins

  • Composite Color Positive
-Used to combine images from more than one slide
-Good to use when comparisons and contrast of two or more images is helpful
-May also be used to add photo inserts to text or graphic information

STEPS IN DIGITAL IMAGING

Acquisition: Converting a visual field into a digital file

  • Our 35-mm film scanner accepts slides (mounted or cut) and negatives.
  • Our Nikon digital camera can be used to record events, to take portraits, to photograph gels, specimens, procedures, or techniques, and also for flatwork on the copy stand.
  • We can acquire images from videotape with our frame grabber system.

Processing: Altering the original digital image so that the output will
be significantly different from the acquired visual

Our graphics department can make the most of your images. We can enhance color, emphasize areas, add text, create composites, and many other such improvements.  Image manipulation is an area in which the greatest strides have been made since the advent of digital processes. (Go to our Graphics page for more information.)

Output: Saving image files on removable media, or generating hardcopy images from these files

  • Digital: We can output to floppies or ZIPs (ours or yours), or to CDs, as presentations or other file formats.
  • Slides: Our Polaroid Digital Palette can convert files to slides.

New Staff Members!

MPS would like everyone to welcome the newest addition to our staff, Joe Cunningham, Electronics Technician.  We are very glad to have him with us

Joanne Brookfield, Audio/Visual Production Specialist, has joined our team.  Her experience and enthusiasm should be a real asset to our department. The video department is expected to make great advances with both Joe and Joanne at work.

Equipment Upgrade!

The audiovisual equipment in the Medical Sciences Building main auditorium is being significantly upgraded. We will be able to originate and receive interactive TeleMedicine broadcasts, as well as satellite downloads. The room is also equipped with a dedicated computer and video data projector, document cameras, VCR, DVD player, wireless keyboard and mouse, new and improved sound system, plasma screens, and touch screen controls for all functions. Traditional media (35mm slide projectors, overhead projectors, etc.) remain the same.

One-hour user training sessions are being scheduled. The first of these was January 2, 2001, and more will follow as needed.  Call Media Production Services at 460-6317 to receive further information.
All medical faculty and staff are urged to attend.

New OCR Software!
Our  Optical Character Recognition software, OmniPage Pro 10, is the latest in OCR technology.  With this software we can scan your pages and convert them to editable text.
This eliminates the need for saving pages of text as large graphics (and using huge blocks of memory), or of retyping text in order to make needed changes.  Thus we save our time and your money.

New Poster production!

Publication Services have acquired a new large format color printer for printing posters up to 54 inches wide by any reasonable length. The charges are substantially less than we have been paying outside vendors, and we have teamed up with Publications to provide even more savings. We have produced several this way so far, and they look great!

New Notebook for computer presentations!

Our new Dell Inspiron 7000 Notebook computer is available for use with our video/data projector.  The new Notebook features Microsoft Windows 98 operating system as well as Microsoft Office 97 with PowerPoint 97 for presentation applications.  We have also installed MacOpener for anyone wishing to present PowerPoint presentations created on a Mac.

The Inspiron is equipped with some impressive hardware components:  128MB SDRAM, 4GB hard drive, 24x internal CD-ROM, and floppy drive, with external Zip drive and an ATI 8MB video card for 32 bit true color projection.

Use of the Notebook may be obtained by scheduling through Media Production Services (460-6317).

New digital video camcorder!

Our video production staff is excited about the arrival of our new Cannon Digital Video Camcorder.  This DV formatted professional camcorder features a 3CCD pickup, a 16x zoom lens, and optical image stabilization.  The video acquired with this camcorder will be superior to the analog formats we've used in the past.

Price changes!

The charges for video recording and post production have been reduced from $65.00 per hour to $50.00 per hour.  The costs for Dye-sublimation printing have been restructured to be less confusing:
     5" x 7" or smaller are $4.00 each
     8" x 10" are $8.00 each
There is now a minimum charge of $6.00 for any request.
