Before coming to the College of Medicine Ray received a Bachelors Degree in Educational Media from the University of South Alabama and served as a Communications Technician in the United States Navy. In 1980 Ray began providing technical support to the faculty, staff, students, and administrators in the College of Medicine. While we came to rely upon his technical skills, it was his cheerful and sincere willingness to help with any of our needs that endeared us to him. Ray provided an upbeat enjoyment of the little things in our everyday work and play that we came to depend on. His attitudes were contagious, and when we were with him, our perceptions of our work, ourselves, and each other were made more positive. Ray had a genuine love for people and the rare ability to bridge barriers of age, culture, and language to establish meaningful contact with individuals from all walks of life. This both characterized and propelled all of Ray’s activities. Ray’s enthusiasm for travel as well as bicycling, his preferred mode of transportation, was fueled by opportunities to relate, in a personal way, with a diversity of people. His skill as a ham radio operator and a video producer even allowed him to bridge barriers of time and space. As far as communications was concerned, Ray was much more than a technician. It is fitting that a room purposed and equipped for conferencing be dedicated to his memory. |
