Welcome to the University of South Alabama Graduate Program in Cancer Biology. This multidisciplinary graduate program offers training that leads to a Ph.D. in Basic Medical Sciences with a specialty in Cancer Biology. The program applies an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the basic science of oncology. It was created to meet the needs of students whose interests bridge several disciplines. This program provides a balance between formal classroom education and independent research. The areas of research focus on signal transduction, gene expression, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, drug development and gene therapy.

Students begin research during the first semester and devote an increasing portion of their time to independent research as their careers progress. Formal class work involves an interdisciplinary core curriculum and a comprehensive cancer biology course that includes the molecular and cellular aspects of carcinogenesis as well as clinical issues related to human cancer. Additionally, electives are available in order to individualize the student's course of study. Students are admitted to candidacy upon completion of an oral defense of a written research proposal, usually at the end of the second year. Students are expected to complete their degree in four to five years with a solid research base from which to build cancer biology careers.

The USA College of Medicine also offers the Medical Scientist Training Program. The goal of this program is to train a small number of exceptional students for careers in basic or clinical academic medicine. Both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees are awarded upon completion of the program.
