Formal requirements set by the Graduate School:

  1. Minimum of 60 credits of graduate work will be required for the Ph.D. degree
  2. Students must complete original research, and write and defend a dissertation
  3. Students must be enrolled for Research and Dissertation during the semester in which the open defense of the dissertation is completed, and must be enrolled in at least one hour of Research and Dissertation during the semester in which the dissertation is approved by the Graduate Dean.
  4. Ph.D. degree dissertation committees must include at least one Full Member of the Graduate Faculty who is the committee chair and normally the student's major professor. A dissertation committee must include at least four members of the Graduate Faculty and must have at least one member from outside the student's department or program.
  5. Once a thesis or dissertation committee is appointed by the Dean of the Graduate School, the student may then enroll for 799 Dissertation credit with permission of the thesis/dissertation committee chair (advisor or major professor).
  6. All requirements for a Ph.D. degree must be completed within seven calendar years from admission to a Ph.D. program at the University of South Alabama.

Formal requirements set by the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Basic Medical Sciences:

  1. Successful completion of the interdiscplinary core curriculum, including three different laboratory rotations
  2. Completion of the advanced curricula required by departments or programs
  3. Maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0
  4. Dissertation Committee identified by the end of one and one-half years of study; the Committee should include the student's mentor and four additional Graduate Faculty - two of the four shall be selected from the major department or program. At least two members shall be selected from outside the major department or program.
  5. Submission of a research project description no later than the end of one and a half years of study (usually at the time the Dissertation Committee is registered)
  6. Dissertation Committee meetings at six-month intervals to review progress
  7. Completion of a Qualifying Examination consisting of written and oral portions
  8. Filing of a formal Research Proposal (Prospectus) within one month of completing the Qualifying Examination.
  9. Completion of a dissertation based on original research; the form and style of the dissertation must conform to standards established by the Graduate School
  10. Satisfactory closed defense of the dissertation before the student's Dissertation Committee
  11. Presention of the dissertation research in a public seminar for the College of Medicine Graduate Faculty

Informal requirements set by the Program:

  2. Distinguished Scientist Seminar series
  3. Departmental seminars or colloquia
  4. Research laboratory group meetings
