Course Description:









This is a six-week basic course in medical biochemistry with emphasis on the properties and intermediary metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. The regulation and integration of metabolic pathways for energy transfer and biosynthesis of major cellular constituents are presented in detail. Enzymes, vitamins, hormones, biochemical genetics, and nutrition are included in the course material. These subjects are oriented towards understanding human disease at the biochemical level. Classes meet four days each week with two section exams. The course is oriented towards providing students a firm knowledge in biochemistry needed for successful achievement in the other basic science courses in Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Pathology and passing biochemical subjects in Step I of the USMLE. All of the faculty have over 13 years experience teaching medical biochemisty, and one has been recognized routinely by the first year class as the best basic science teacher.

Qualifications/Prerequisites: This course is designed for medical, dental and graduate students. Prerequisites include a written permission from the Dean or appropriate administrator from the student's school.
