The Curriculum

Biochemistry is the scientific field that is the foundation for understanding molecular aspects of all other biomedical science disciplines.  The graduate program in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is designed to provide students with a broad background in biochemistry and molecular biology.  The USA Biochemistry faculty are a nationally recognized group of scientists with diverse training in the areas of protein chemistry, enzymology, physical biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular virology, and bioorganic chemistry.  Research interests within the Department focus on a wide variety of important basic problems in biomedicine.   Current interests include synthesis and biochemical pharmacology of anticancer agents, lung development and metabolism, gene regulation, molecular virology, DNA damage and repair, aging, breast cancer, signal transduction mechanisms, specialized biochemistry of malarial parasites, and molecular basis of human genetic disease.

The program leading to the Ph.D. requires that students integrate a core biomedical sciences curriculum (link to: http://southmed.usouthal.edu/com/bmsphd/) their first year followed by a year of basic science electives with required departmental courses. The student becomes familiar with on-going research in the Department and is counseled in planning a course of study tailored to his or her career goals. After the first year course work and research rotations in up to three faculty laboratories are completed, the students begin their full time Ph.D. thesis research with the faculty mentor of their choice. Candidates for the Ph.D. degree by the end of the second year complete a formal research proposal which becomes the basis of their Ph.D. research project. Each student's research culminates in writing their doctoral dissertation. The work described in the final dissertation must be original, independent, and exhibit scientific merit that leads to the student's research accomplishments being presented at national meetings and the results published in the biochemical literature. The faculty are committed to assisting students in obtaining their educational goals. Every student is viewed as an individual, and their graduate program is tailored to provide training and experience in the student's desired areas of specialization within Biochemistry.
