Medical Librarians' Salaries and Job Classifications: The
Results of MLA's Hay Study
How has information technology changed, and how will it continue to change,
the role and accountabilities of medical library professionals? In
early 2000, The Hay Group, one of the world’s largest human resources consulting
firms, was commissioned by the Medical Library Association (MLA) to conduct
a study about how organizations compensate medical library professionals
performing information technology oriented roles. With guidance provided
by MLA staff, the Hay Group developed a custom survey to:
· gather information about and analyze the job content
and compensation of medical library jobs.
· gather information about other important IT-related issues
facing medical libraries in different types of institutions.
The ultimate goal of the study is to provide data that will help us understand
how technology oriented jobs are designed and how they are paid in medical
library organizations, to support setting compensation levels in your own
institution and to support the attraction and retention of employees in
IT-related positions.

How to Work With Your Chief Information Officer
Technology permeates health care education and delivery, including medical
libraries. CIOs in this world must understand the needs of users
and communicate with those users in relevant terms. The relationship
between the CIO and the medical librarian can vary from openly war-like
to mutually supportive. Clair Goldsmith will discuss the role of
the CIO and how medical librarians can leverage that role to provide better
services to our mutual constituencies.

Coordinator of Clinical Outcomes

Librarians' Contributions to the Health Care System
"Nonacademic" health systems perform clinical and administrative research,
teach health care providers, and require extensive literature review to
support evidence-based care management. Jan Englert's presentation will
describe the diverse role of the health system librarian and her multifaceted
contributions.

20th Anniversary Luncheon
Carolyn Haines, author of
Touched and Them Bones
Carolyn Haines was raised in Mississippi, but now resides outside of Mobile.
Ms. Haines writes about the South that she loves and understands using
unforgettable characters that could only come from this part of the world.
Her unique voice is evident in her early novels, Summer of the Redeemers
and Touched, both set in a small Mississippi town. Her latest novel,
Them Bones, a slight departure from her earlier more serious books, is
a mystery featuring an unconventional Southern belle as the unlikely detective.
Ms. Haines will be signing copies of her books after the luncheon.
Books will be available to purchase.

Hospital Library Luncheon
Eileen Stanley, AHIP and the Hospital Librarian
What tools do you have for creating and executing a professional development
plan for your career? Do you rely on local continuing education courses
and mandates from your employer? Do you read and participate in activities
that broaden your experience and help you network with colleagues? Do you
seek out new challenges and ways to contribute to the profession?
Being the professional hospital librarian that you are expected to be
or the one you are determined to become involves all of the above activities.
But knowing when to take on each of these tasks and how to assimilate your
learning into your professional repertoire takes some guidance. This
guidance can come from many places, and as a member of the Medical Library
Association it is available to you in the form of the Academy of Health
Information Professionals. Along with tools from other professional
organizations and programs in development by MLA, a career development
plan is made easier and more rewarding by taking advantage of AHIP membership.
Eileen Stanley will discuss these programs and tools and how they can fit
into your professional life to make you the best and most fulfilled hospital
librarian possible.
