Quality Filtering: Principles of Evidence-Based Medicine

Course objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to 

  • understand trends in the use of biomedical knowledge, its different sources, and their usefulness and validity.  Issues of extracting information for the purpose of knowledge acquisition and filtering will also be discussed.
  • understand the basic concepts of evidence-based medicine, including characteristics of various study design, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and strengths and weaknesses of these publication types.
  • become aware of the role of information specialists in the practice of evidence-base medicine and identify opportunities for putting these principles into practice
  • gain confidence in the proper techniques for filtering biomedical information including tailoring results to the clinical context, critically assessing the literature, and selecting and synthesizing the most relevant items.
  • understand the importance of lifelong learning and building a personal knowledge base to increase filtering skills.

Using New DOCLINE (HANDS-ON)

Course objectives: Participants will learn how to (1) update a DOCUSER record; (2) place a DOCLINE request through an embedded PubMed module, an embedded LocatorPlus module, or a Unique Identifier; (3) delete/add/update SERHOLD record(s); (4) query the SERHOLD database; (5) change Routing Tables, and (6) request reports.

Building and Managing Your Digital Library

Course objectives: This course examines how to create and manage a digital library consisting of a set of networked electronic services, databases, and collections. The course will incorporate the notion of a health science library's current and potential role in its parent organization's networked information systems infrastructure and development.  The extensive course bibliography covers issues ranging from management to technology, including techniques such as metadata, databases, and other low-cost, high-impact technologies.

Serials Management

Course objectives: Explore the many facets of serials management, including budgeting, selection and deselection, acquisitions, receipt, check-in, use studies,
vendors, stacks management, claiming, binding, gifts & exchanges, backfiles,
e-journals, and the public service aspects of serials work.  Equip yourself to manage this expensive and critical part of your collection.  Learn what you really need to know, but didn't learn in library school.  With most of your collection budget invested in serials, don't you need to know more?  In response to tasking by the CE Committee of MLA's Technical Services Section (TSS), Mary Buttner and Jett McCann developed MLA CE course 431 Serials Management.  It has been taught nationally at MLA, at chapter and state health science library association meetings, and for academic and hospital librarians and library staff.

Keeping up with NLM’s PubMed (HANDS-ON)

Course objectives: This class is designed for the NLM searcher who has been searching the PubMed system but would like a refresher. This class is also designed for the searcher who may be transitioning to PubMed from searching MEDLINE on another system. It is expected that students attending the class are familiar with MEDLINE, the MeSH vocabulary, and Boolean Logic as these core topics will not be covered extensively in this class.
